Got clutch smoking hot. What to change?
My 6.7 manual only has 600 miles. Last night I got myself in a situation where I HAD to BACK a 2000 lbs trailer up a steep and narrow incline. Okay so steep I that when I stopped in the middle I had to engage 4wd to get going again. Not being a pro at this I had to pull forward and adjust a few times and of course that meant riding the clutch.
The clutch got so hot it was smoking like a tire fire and smelling like one too. Other than not doing this again (that tuner doesn't need to work on my toys that bad
) what should I do for the pickup? Change tranny fluid?

just breaking it in
You are just breaking your clutch in. I have had smoke rolling off mine three different times now. It still has no problems engaging or anything. The stock clutches are just weak about slipping. As soon as you get it hot it will slip way bad. The worst time I slippped mine was sled pullin and it was pouring out white smoke bad, I could smell it for a couple days. The best clutch for your situation is a 550 horsepower south bend clutch with the hydralic upgrade, just for parts you are looking at $1300 not bad I dont think. Good luck
I have had mine extremely hot a few times, smelled it for a week after one of the times. It is still holding but I just put my Predator on last night and have not had a chance to see if it is slipping yet or not since I only go 7 miles to work and it is all stop and go traffic. I would say use it until it won't hold anymore then get a South Bend DD with hydrolic upgrade and you should be fine. $0.02

Thanks for the info guys because it puts mind at ease. I knew I was abusing the plates but the smell was so bad etc. I was wondering if it got so hot it was vaporizing oil. The smell is still in the truck this morning as you say. thanks again.
You do not want the dual disk south bend, It is drivable for everyday driving but it is real rough and loud you will hear it over the sound of the motor. If you are not going to make it a drag racing truck or sledpullin truck there is no need for the dual disk the 550 hp single disc is all that you will need with the hydralic upgrade or you stock system will be shot in no time
My bad sorry about that sb makes a dd street clutch and a dd sled pulling clutch so you should be able to get a dual disk street clutch from 550 hp to 850 hp for a that are still capable of sled pullin and drag racing. And they are not as bad to drive as the normal dd sled pullin clutch
This is one of the reasons why I like Ford manual hubs over the Dodge design. We could then use our 4x4 low range. I hope to see this on Dodge's new style trucks!
I got mine hot today. I have had alot of manuals in my time but this one will heat up in a second. My 05 was night and day better than this one. I am not going to complain to much though because its better than the piece of crap auto I had.
