Fooling ECM (with DPF) with in line resistor

Applicable to DD 60 series, but.....????

I was listening to Sirius Road Dog Truckers Channel 147, and on it a caller called in to say that his father (a Detroit Diesel 60 Series Mechanic) had told him to reduce EGR by 70% which would also increase his fuel mileage by .7 mpg (on a big truck) to his engine by taking a 380 ohm resistor and solder it in line to the green sensor wire by the EGR valve, (that if disconnected would throw a code and derate the engine with in 2 hours of operation but if connected properly would put the ECM in a test mode). Any larger a capacitor would throw a code and also derate the engine! Granted, it applies to DD engines, but I wonder if that same approach could be applied to the ISB?
If one could find such a technique, it could be developed using a simple "add on" diagnostic wireharnes could be built and sold as a "test mode" modification to, ahem, "diagnose" drivability problems by reducing EGR?

Pull the plug on the EGR.. I did and it made a good 1 mpg difference.

Now with the Smarty, it disables it anyway.. No need to solder in.
