Flash updates..

Is there any way to tell if a 6.7 has had the latest flash without having the dealer look at the computer data with his monitor???

Will an aftermarket OBD device recover this information?? or is it recorded somewhere on the truck papers when they do the flashes??

Thanks

There will be a sticker placed by the dealer under the hood with the flash info

SUPPOSED to be a sticker. A lot of dealers won't/don't put them on!

Most TSB's will have a description of the problem that the flash is for. IF you scroll thru all the TSB's, look for ones that are driveablilty related, or electrical related and read the first few paragraphs. That is usually where the info is.

Do you have a specific problem you are trying to fix?

Thanks for the info vzdude...

Not a specific problem, my friend is going to get one for his construction company and we were wondering if trucks already on the lot for a while were kept updated with the flashes, or if we bought one and would it have problems because the dealer had not done the flashes while the vehicle as sitting and waiting to be sold.

It looks like the only way to tell would be to have them check and show us before the truck was purchased. Trying to avoid unneccessary down time and performance problems problems.

I assume they plug into the OBD and it would show the latest version of software for the truck.

One would think they would automatically keep the lot trucks updated???

I spoke with the sales manager of my dealership this week after experiencing problems with my new 2007 6.7 after only one week of ownership. He said Dodge will not pay for the flash updates on trucks in dealer inventory, only after they have been sold and apparently only then if specific issues show up that would be fixed by a new flash. At least that is my experience since the service department has refused to reflash mine after 2 separate CELs (P2000 and P0513) and (P2000 and P0128).

In my mind that doesn't really excuse the dealership's policy. It would probably only cost them about $20 out of pocket to do the trucks in inventory if you figure the mechanic can do other work once he gets the reflash started. This whole issue has left a bad taste in my mouth for Dodge (Cummins too).

Thanks Dale K..

That is very interesting, it sort of shows how this whole industry thinks...

They are operating in a time warp, to not have flashes updated on inventory would be sort of like selling vehicles with the tires half flat.

I am so disappointed with this whole industry, my experience with a 16 day rear pinion seal job a few weeks ago really got me wondering how they will survive.

Sounds like a poor service department! Not only will Dodge pay warranty on "in stock" trucks, the service department is missing out on dollars! I would make sure that the service department that I intend on dealing with will do the updates whenever there is a new one. I worked at a dealer for several years and it is all on "how" the workorder is written up. I tried to keep my customers modules updated with the latest flash so they WOULDN'T have a problem! I know, I know, that makes wayyyy too much sense! Anyhow, hopefully you can find a service department that will work with you on this, and make sure before you go out of warranty to have them check for updates again while it is on someone else's budget!

Friend of mine was at a dealer and all 6.7s were lined up in front of one lane of the service drive. He ask the guy what was going on.They were installing the new AU flash on all inventory.Friend had been told by TWO dealers his had the LATEST flash. The dealer personal flashing the inventory trucks checked his.It did NOT have the latest. They wrote a ticket and did his while he waited.Thats kinda how things should work.

Which dealer helped him? THOSE are the businesses we should be naming and passing on for others to use if at all possible. Kudos to the ones that actually care!

Funny when I purchased my truck, the tech was on the lot updating the new trucks with the latest flash. When I asked about the issues, he explained to me that Dodge would not allow them to sell the trucks unless they had the latest update. Goes to show you that they all have a different story.

His truck had just(several days before)been in two other dealers for smoke issue and NPF.Hays in Cornelia Georgia flashed it while doing the ones in inventory. Smoke went away. But turbo failed withen the week(he said hot and towing it went to screaming) He swapped the 07 6.7 back to hays in Cornelia for a 05 with 34k or so it and said maybe he''ll get another 6.7 in a year or two when there dependable again.
