first oil change on a 6.7, worst experiance ever?
first oil change on a 6.7, worst experience ever?
Since I picked up the new to me rig on Friday, I figured I'd change the oil so I can get it on a regular schedule. Ran around for awhile, came home, got my regular pan out, dropped the plug and SURPRISE, oils going friggin everywhere!!!! Down both arms, its hitting the bottom of the pan and splashing out on a beautiful 360 degree circle. I tried tilting the pan to help with the splashing, NO WAY, its EVERYWHERE. Its all over my shirt and new shorts (boy am I going to hear about that one!!), in my watch, under the wedding band and all over the floor in a nice 3 foot circle and that oil is REALLY HOT!!!! Man, is it black too, tried wiping it up and it is a mess. I left the plug out and I'm putting in a EZ change plug tonight.
Don't even get me started on that filter location...
I miss the 5.9 already...

Three foot circle...I wish!! I covered one whole side of my garage and part way over to the other bay...only stopped by my being in the way of the splatter. I had a hour before my son and I had to be at the hockey rink for a game...rink's 25 miles away...figured that I had time for a 20 minute job like changing the oil. I had bought a new 3 1/2 gallon oil catch pan...complete with drain-thru top. Slid the pan under the drain plug and dropped the plug...the hot oil hit the pan and sprayed in a 5'+ radius...except for where I laid on the creeper. I immediately yelled at my son to get rags!!! By the time he got back, the oil flow had stopped and there I stood, spitting hot, dirty oil. I was so ****** and my son was expecting me to go ballistic. After I got a couple of clean rags and got the oil off of my mouth, it began to sink in just how silly I must look. He and I discussed this and ended up almost rolling on the floor, laughing at me. He decided I looked like one of the members of KISS. He went to the hockey game by himself and I no longer change oil in the garage. If change time hits during the winter, I buy the oil and filter and take it somewhere to be done. Any other time, it gets changed outside in my shale driveway.
I thought about going with one of the EZ change plugs but decided against that because of how far below the pan they stick. And there's the issue of how far their threads go up into the pan...keeping all of the oil from draining out.
For the filter, I crack it loose with a wrench...then slip a zip lock bag up over it before finishing removal by hand.

get the Fumoto drain valve. yeah mine sticks down away from the pan but if you ever hit anything tall enough to rip out the oil pan bolt the front axle is already heading towards your lap. just my .02
Thanks for the funny story, I looked like a dairy cow with all the black splotches all over. I did some research and the threads do not stick higher therefore getting the oil out.

.......we live this at work everyday. You have to put the bucket up as close to the pan as you can.....and still you'll often get some splash. Always fun to watch a new guy drop the plug with the drain bucket a foot below the drain plug......and it suuuuurrrrreee is BLACK!!

i also have the fumoto. the plug doesn't stick down below the pan far enough to be worried about it. if you offroad a lot then maybe, but for daily driving/towing with occasional off road don't even think twice about it. just go get one. it is well protected by the front diff/axle.
also, i haven't had an issue with not getting all the oil out. the threads of the fumotot to stick up higher than the inside bottome of the pan, but the amount of oil left behind is minimal. i justify it by not having to wait for the oil to cool before draining, i can drain it as soon as i shut down the truck and while all the particles are still floating before they hit the bottome of the pan.

i should really learn how to spell 'bottome'!!!
a story about the ez drain plug system for you:
a friend installed the ez drain and i installed the fumoto at similar times. the ez drain worked great for a couple times until the spring loaded seal failed while screwing in the tube to drain and ended up popping a piece of the plug into the oil pan. so no big deal, the guy figured he'd just drop the pan and get it out. WRONG on his 2003 the pan won't come off enough to get it out because it hits a cross member. a magnet won't work either because it is brass . . . .
he took the truck to cummins and thay had to pull the engine part way out to drop the pan!!
the 'ez drain' plug turned out to be not so 'easy' after all!!!

You guys ! lol..... get a big coffee can, cut the bottom out, place it up against the oil pan, put your hand in there and take out the plug, by the way, wait untill the oil has cooled. This isn't rocket science surgery.
Yeah...up to 3 driveway splotches now. A couple of changes ago, I tried the 5 gallon bucket trick...only to find that the bucket was cracked and I lost at least a gallon on the shale. It turns out my son knew that...think he was hoping for some kind of repeat of the original laughfest...
I too had the fountain of oil under my truck. I bought a heavy duty cleaning bucket ( WALMART??) that holds 4 gallons and its about 1 foot tall. It works awesome. Not too tall and not short enough to let the splash out. I also have learned that laying a tarp down and then doing the oil change on it helps out a lot.
Don't take the plug all the way out? I do that on my 97 and it just drains around the plug creating a steady down stream. I don't remember having a problem with the change on the 6.7, well other than needing an impact to get the oil filter off! (J/K)
Cant believe somebody would pull the plug on a hot engine. That oil is so nasty it drains just fine when its cooled off. I chandeg my 08 6.7 18 times already right in my driveway and only have one spot where the oil filter slipped out of my hand while draining it into the used oil bucket. Even changing oil filter when its cool makes no mess.
