I hear ya......my 8-year old daughter, Alexis, said my face looked like one of the 101 Dalmatians the first time I changed the oil in my 6.7L. The first few times I changed the oil, it came out 'bout like a cow peeing on a flat rock. Since a few components have fallen off (due to rough roads in my area) the oil changes are easier to deal with.

What brand and type of oil is recomended for these 6.7's? By the sounds of things I just might take it to the *********** for my oil changes. How long is recomended before your first oil change?

Even changing oil filter when its cool makes no mess.
I always change oil when the engines are hot, thought everybody did.

I don't mean ice cold. But letting it cool down after driving. Enough to where you can use your hand to remove plug and filter, without saying **** thats hot . I always hold catch pan up to drain plug while unscrewing plug, then slowing lower pan to shop floor. After that I remove oil fill cap and oil filter and just let it drain for 20+ min.

Here is what I've found out too. I dump the oil when its hot, let it drain for a day(if you have the time), then before I button everything up, I undo the oil filter. It seems to drain itself down about a 1/4 of the capacity of the filter and its much easier to take off. The benefit I've found of letting it drain when its hot and for an extended period of time, is my oil is still relatively clean 200 miles after the oil change.

My 6.7L's oil drains best after my 57 mile commute home from work.....I have been known to leave the truck running with high idle engaged while I round up my drain pan and ratchet.

I must me a glutton for punishment in regards to hot oil burns !

Man! I thought I was the only one! Went to change the oil in my wife's truck for the first time on our newly poured driveway. No big deal! Changed oil in many of cars and trucks. Got out all the things I use when doing my Dodge and even laid down an absorbing mat. When I loosened the drain plug and the oil didn't run pass the threads like MY 5.9, I thought no big deal again. But when I dropped the drain plug all the way out and black oil hit my large drain pan, I was making new curse words up as I went! I couldn't move fast enough as that crap went everywhere! Now I have a big black spot and tire marks from moving her truck afterwards in the driveway! LIVE-N-LEARN

I uh...thought...the 6.7 held 20 quarts, not 12 as did the 5.9...a 3 1/2 gallon pan won't hold it all.

So let me get this straight you have to take the plug all the way out on the 6.7s it doesnt start to drain beforehand?

The 6.7L's will start trickling after a few turns......just like the 5.9L's.
