Engine coolant filter
Engine coolant filters are very popular with the Ford 6.0 crowd due to the casting sand being left in the block after manufacturing and plugging up the EGR cooler. A coolant filter would not hurt anything, but honestly, on the 6.7's I don't think its something that you will get much of a benefit from. These engines have proven themselves to be pretty tough so far.
Now a good 2 micron fuel filter for the common rail would be a completely different discussion.

They are not completely necessary, but can't hurt a thing. They will improve flow to the head, as well as dissipate heat when towing, not to mention clean fluid is happy fluid.
Here is my install, its a 5.9 but no difference.

I know Cummins uses coolant filters in some of their engines (QSM 11 comes to mind) , But I believe its used in the ones that use cyclinder liners. Constant vibration of the cylinder liner causing a brief vacuum to form on its surface. The coolant will boil in that vacuum and vapor bubbles will implode on the liner surface, which is what causes the cavitation of the liner. These coolant filters come with a addiitive in them that will coat the liner and protect it from the errosion that is caused by the cavitations. Different types of filters will have a differents streangh of additive in them. Since our 6.7's and 5.9's do not have liners i dont believe adding a coolant filter will add any value. Im not saying cavitation is not possible, however i think its more relevant in engines with cylinder liners within them. As long as you do proper preventinve maintenance to the coolant system you shouln't have any issues with it for a many, many miles.

Yes a coolant filter is much more important on engines with liners, and all Cummins with liners have a coolant filter from the factory.
But I have never seen a cooling system stay clean (not filthy, but not distilled water clean) on any rig, so I have no doubt a filter will help. In addition to the additional flow thru the head.
