emission question

my 09 was made after april and I heard that if you put a programer on my truck the computer will shut down the truck. I don't want to put on a programer but I would like to take all the emission garbage off would this shut down the truck?

Not a new rig guy but I do know that "taking emissions garbage off" will cause you issues. Your check engine light would come on and may not even run at all. thats what (some) programmers do is allow you to take of that stuff and have the rig still run.

You can still delete the emissions, which contrary to what estrada5.9 says is a GOOD thing, but for now the only "programmer" you can run is an edge since it doesn't download to the ECM, which is locked by the new flash on trucks built after 3/26/09. So, my advice is, delete the DPF/EGR stuff and run the Edge to clear codes on start up and you will be good! If you need more help, feel free to PM me.

Depends on your dealer. If you're worried about voiding the warranty you probably shouldn't be doing it. But you can always replace what you've taken off before taking it back to the dealer. The whole point of getting rid of the emissions crap anyways is to avoid trips to the dealer for plugged up DPG, sooted up turbo and EGR problems. So, I guess it really just boils down to personal preference.

Infidel thank you for your helpful information sorry it took me so long to get back with you It's a darn shame the EPA and thier infinite knowledge took excellent diesel motors and are slowly destroying them. You know when I checked the oil in my 6.7 after 100 miles was black as coal what a shame to have the motor to breath it's own soot

Eh, the oil has been dirty in these trucks for awhile due to injection changes. You aint seen nothing yet, just wait till Tier IV kicks in this January. Just more costs for the consumer and producer.

Thank goodness the 6.7 is already tier IV compliant. Those shopping for a 2010 diesel truck won't have to gamble on a new engine if they buy CTD.

Well arent they going to a urea/scr system for Tier IV? If not it would be a huge plus because I'm pretty sure thats where Ford and Chevy are going.

I would put some time and miles on the new truck before messing with a good running rig.

Yes, Ford and Chevy are going with Urea in 2010 for Tier IV. Only the Cab & Chassis (commercial) trucks from Dodge will require urea. Not sure why, probably want to ease into it because they know it's coming sooner or later?

someone please correct me if I misunderstand this. the urea system will do away with the EGR valve only. the truck will still have dpf, plus you will have a seperate tank for the urea that you have to fill. i am not sure which will be the worst evil.

No, it's my understanding that the cab & chassis trucks (as well as Chevy and Ford) will have BOTH urea and EGR to be compliant next year. Cummins could have chosen one or the other back in 2007, but went with only the EGR (urea probably wasn't readily available back then anyway), played it smart and nailed the 2010 emissions as well with only the EGR.

BTW, I believe Ford has had EGR since 2003 and the dreaded 6-oh-no.
