Which Code Reader?

I'd like to purchase a code reader for personal use. I've got a constant CEL situation (like many of you) and would like to have the ability to read codes and clear the light instead of running to others to do it. I priced some in an auto parts store today. They ranged in price from $85 to $177. The more expensive ones provide more info on the code and have the ability to connect to a computer. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance...

if u was going to spend that money on a reader, I would just ante up and buy a programmer (like smarty jr) that will read the codes, clear them AND give you things like high idle, performance enhancements, and ability to adjust for tire size.

just my humble 02.

Thanks for that list. I don't hear much about the MP-8 on this forum for the 6.7L... It seems like most people are waiting for the Smarty or Quadzilla?

Well, I purchased an Innova 3100 scan tool yesterday and was able to shut off the CEL. There were no codes stored at this time, however. I'm glad to have this tool so every time the CEL illuminates I can quickly check for error codes and erase that light. It's worth it, not having to run to the dealer or even an auto parts store for a free codes check. Besides, the auto parts stores won't erase the CEL for you.

You might want to take it in to the dealer for the latest flash. There has already been another software release to correct probs in the G30 recall flash. Its free if you're under 5/100-just cost you some time

The Innova 3100 is the same one i have had for a while. Bought it from summit, was about $150 when i bought it. It looks to have gone down a bit since:

It is a good scanner that reads and clears codes easily. I have been happy with it's performance. That being said, as soon as the Smarty is released for the 6.7L trucks, i will be one of the first to buy. The Smarty does every thing the Innova does, but also allows you to compensate for tire size changes, gear ratio changes, and is a power adder as well if you choose to utelize it. I have no plans of using any of the power tunes right now, but who knows what I will decide in the future. I would rather have a unit that allows me to do more should i decide to use it down the line. Just my $.02

Thanks for the info, Sweeney. Hey, if these re-flashes finally fix the CEL problem, I will have bought the new scan tool for no reason....well, I guess it's still good to have around .
