colorado has been smog checking diesel trucks for years. every other year in order to renew your plates.

it was not that tough to pass my 03 had an EZ and passed easy. some of it would depend on where you went to get it done.

in most cases cali is first with these kind of things but not this time.

When I moved from CA to NV I discovered that diesels here must be smogged.

However I bought my 5.9L in August anticipating that CA would force 6.7L owners to smog their truck, I suppose I was wrong and they too will be exempt.

As previously mentioned, certain counties along the Front Range of Colorado have been requiring bi-annual emissions tests on diesels for at least 15 or 20 years. It really isn't that big of a deal.

The State of Colorado's current laws do not require them to enforce any Federal statutes. So, a Colorado emissions station doesn't care if your catalytic convertor is missing, as long as your truck doesn't create more pollutants than allowed for that year/model of truck. On 3 previous diesels I swapped out my complete stock exhaust system, added performance chips and air intakes and never had a problem passing the emissions tests.

Obviously as the standards become stricter for the newer trucks it may become more difficult to pass the emissions test with any of the NOx convertors or DPF's missing. They do actually put the truck on a dyno and put it under load.

Maybe it's because I'm getting older, but I'm very happy with the performance of my stock 6.7 and have no desire to performance mod it. With the risk to warranty and emissions tests, it just doesn't seem worth it any more.

And, I'm am not ashamed to say that I am glad to be driving the cleanest light duty diesel truck in the US.

x2. It is powerful, quiet, and superclean. Very impressive except for the mpg. I'm proud to own and drive it for not only CA, but everywhere.

NC started doing mandatory emissions testing with the inspections about two years ago. The price of an inspection went up from $9 to $40. Thankfully, I have my Cummins and my wife has her TDI, so were both exempt.

dpfs and cats dont bother me, the egr valve is the only thing about the 6.7 that bothers me. It gets soot in places it doesnt need to be and it seems it would affect the longevity of the motor

To the people who cry, whine, complain and moan about California smog laws...
Hell, smog laws in any state.....
Try to imagine for just a few seconds how things would be if there were no smog laws .................................................. ...................................

Times up.
Did ya think about it?
I didn't think so.....as to be expected.
Ever been to Tijuana Mexico?
Take a deep breath buddy.
And if being in California is that bad, please.....leave and take someone with you.
There isn't enough cheese and crackers to go around with all the whining.

I guess you've never passed the sniffer but failed the visual. Or get sent to the Smog Ref for having a stock exhaust system. That's okay, as long as you can rationalize it to yourself.

Is that a California thing?
The times when I have failed a smog test were no big deal.
There was a problem, I fixed the problem, re-tested and went on my way.
Let me guess.
You lost the cat and failed the visual?
Go hollow. It's cheap and it works.
And if your stock exhaust was 100% stock, why go see the Ref?
Rationalize it to myself?
Don't need to since I simply take responsibility for my actions.

No, factory stock, no modifications, and newbie cop. Figure the rest out.

Well put Pete! I'm 57 and remember well, coughing when I got out of the water in the 60's & 70's after surfing. LA smog would creep all the way down here to San Diego. The air is much cleaner today despite a huge increase in vehicles, due largely to emission controls. Heck,my Smarty sat in my bedroom until Marco released the new low smoke update. I couldn't handle seeing unburnt fuel flying out of the exhaust.
