To buy or not

Well I'm switching from Ford to Dodge. Here's my question. I'm looking at a 08 2500 4x4 mega cab STS, diesel 6.7 with 15k miles on it. It was a "buy back" truck because the 1st onwer just drove it around town and it never would get to the "regen" state and it kept turning on lights and they kept taking it back to the dealer. The dealer says the Dodge has replace the exhaust system and the computer and now all is well. Does this sound reasonable or is it all smoke and BS. Can this kind of problem cause any long term problem later when I'm pushing 100K plus miles ?They're asking 35k and say they'll do better. What do you think? Thanks for your in put .

Ask them to see all the paper work on any work that has been done to it. Cummin's are great motor's. Play hard ball with them. A good friend of mine told me when I was in the market for a newer truck tell the dealer what you want your monthly payments at. They will deal with you they have to they are not selling truck's like they used to. If a dealer tells you they are not being effected by the economy they are wrong.

I disagree with this. When you negotiate this way, the dealership will use creative financing/leasing to get your desired monthly payment - and we all now know where creative financing leads to......
Negotiate the price of truck only...then negotiate the financing if you need it.

Gordy, like Hemi said, ask for copies of all the work done to the truck, and get the carfax report prior to talking price. Read them, and if you need to, go home with them. If they are being honest with you, you really should have no issues with truck (regarding the regen issues).

carfax report

I ran a carfax report on the truck and I've attached a link here for all to read.
My bigest concern is will a lemon always be a lemon or was it just because the truck was never allowed to regen as they said?

Is it a Dodge dealer that you are working with? If so, you might be a little safer. If not, I'd walk away.
All in all, this depends on you. Are you a gambler by nature? If a great deal turns bad, can you live with yourself for taking the risk? If so, then go for it. If there is some doubt, walk away and go get one that you know you can sleep at night with....(figuratively meant, of course!).

Looks to me like the "2nd owner" was the title transfer for the buy back. Maybe I'm just cheap, but 35K for a buy back seems pretty steep. I've heard rumors of people getting brand spanking new and loaded for nearly that price...

From reading the carfax report and what you have stated in your thread this truck is very similar to mine. I bought mine new in Nov. 2007 for 38K no trade. I got my own financing through my insurance agent lowest interest rate and best terms I could find.
I have driven mine for 17K miles and I have only done minor mods such as gages and Mag-Hytec covers. I pull a 5er during the camping season that's why I have the diesel. Truck has been in for some warranty work such as turbo-cleaning and the one safety recall H-34.
Drive the truck hard watch the EGT's let the truck regen when needed. Get out on the highway once in awhile, these trucks will preform as designed. A lot of people believe what the salesman states that they can be used as a taxi cab. They can not, I drive mine as a daily driver but get out on the highway at least once a week to allow a good regen of the dpf system.
I would buy another 6.7L again but you need to understand that this is not the 5.9L nor the 12V Cummins of old. These are differnt engines meeting new federal laws and we the owners need to understand how to drive and use them. Have fun and enjoy the truck, but I would not pay over 28K for a used 2008 Mega Cab 6.7L 2500HD. My $0.02.

Too worried to buy used

Thanks guys for your input on this matter. In the end I was just to worried that I would have a LEMON and be stuck with it. I bought a NEW 09 2500 Big Horn Quad cab, 6.7 4wd. Now if I can just keep folks from parking near me at the stores, stones from hitting the windsheild, kids with bikes running into it and the wife from smoking the tires, I hate the new truck jetters.
