Auto trans, cold weather warmup?

Asking for a buddy with a new 6.7/auto. Now that it's colder in the mornings (10-20 deg F), he warms up the truck for about 5min, then takes off down the hiway.
Said it wont up shift, stays at 2500-2600 rpms for 5 miles or so, then upshifts again and the rpms drop down to around 1600.
Is this like the Alli trans where they won't lock the t/c until the trans warms up a bit, to help it warm up faster?
Is the 68RFE staying in 5th unlocked, or 6th unlocked?

His truck is working properly. With a fully electronic tranny they will not go into overdrive or Torque converter lockup so they can build heat. Once the fluid temp comes up the will act normal. Too cold a fluid is just as bad as too hot of a fluid.
