Anyone have a fan clutch fail?
Fan Clutch seems to be going out... It is making a rattle and grinding noise right behind the radiator and I can reach up and (with the motor off) move the part with the wire going to it and I can hear the slop in it... That is the only part that seems to be making any noise... I had an 04 that did that and ended up chopping it's own harness and shattering three fan blades in the process...
Here is some questions >>
Can you remove it and lube up that part so it will last longer??
Can I just chop the wire off at the clutch and let it ride??
Is there anything I can do to a new one that will make it last longer than 50K miles??

My fan clutch just went!
Hey Oilguy, I have a 2003 long box 5spd manual with 74,000 miles on it when the fan clutch gave out. Mine started to rattle about 73,000 miles but shortly after I notice my fan clutch was engaged regardless of engine temperature. Mine chopped the fan harness but did not break any blades. I was able to purchase a Hayden fan clutch through O' Reilly for just over $200.00.
Where and how much did you pay for you clutch oilguy?? Like they say, you get what you pay for. Also, don't cut the wires off, it's just going to set codes, and render the truck inoperable. Spend more than $60 (like $200) for a new clutch, replace the hub, and be done with it.

After the 04 chopped the harness and busted the blades... I just let it go through the winter and fixed in in the spring... It didn't throw any codes or set off the CEL.
Are you guys saying that their is an alternative to buying one from the dealer?? They want 355.05 for an OEM fan clutch...
I found an OEM online for $215 that is NIB but if there is an after market setup I may try that just so I don't have to deal with the dealership.
Current truck is an 08 6.7L Auto with 52K miles

YES, when I jumped my truck and the fan cut the harness that controls the fan clutch! LOL...

Have you checked on the Horten Fan? I could never have justified buying one but if your fan is going bad? The Horten is suppose to add HP and warm up quickier. Just a thought. Merry Christmas everybody!
