Anyone have experience with the wiring on our elec/clutch fan (Viscous)

My belt started to shread, and somhow grab teh wiring for the viscous fan drive, and yanked it out of the fan. I pulled the fan and opened up the loom at the fan, and found 6 wires. What is odd is where the harness plugs into one another (about 12 inches down from teh fan), there are only 5 wires. At te fan there is obviously 1 extra wire, a red one.

Now, once the wiring got ripped out, my AC would not work at idle, only driving down teh road. (worked perfect BEFORE teh wiring got ripped up).

OK, I went to strip back the 5 wires ( i was going to leave the extra red wire alone since the other 5 wires color matched the wires at the connector). Alos, I have a shop manual, and it gives a diagram of the plug, and is exactly how it is on my truck. Unfortunaley, they do not have a diagram AT THE FAN. So, anyways, as I amstripping back the wire, I notice that the blue wire (at the fan) is not a wire, it is insulation or somthing. So, I strip back the extra red wire, and use it in place of my now missng blue wire. I get it all hooked up, plugged in, and go drive my truck. AC works GREAT again, idle, drving down the road, everything, BUT, NOW my clutch fan is engaged at all times.

So, my question is:

Anyone wire up teh viscous fan before?
And if so, what is going on with mine?

I would say if your blue wire is only insulation, when it pulled apart, all the wire was pulled out of the insulation. Didn't see that you already had the diagrams! Sorry about that!

It's OK, thanks for the help. Yes, I have that pic already (service manual). But what gets me though, is, what is the red wire for then? That was another thing that bothered m was on the plug (the pic you provided) has provisions for 6 wires, but the # 4 loactionis blokced off on th factory plug. But, again, at teh fan there ARE 6 wires. Also, the blue wire with insulation, how come there is NO insulation at the plug? You strip the coating off, and there is your strands of wire, NO insulation. BUT, at the fan end, you strip back the coating, and NO wire, but only a white fiber type of material (what I am refering to as the insulation) is found inside.

Also, does anyone know if I can take the plug off the fan? I sudied it real hard while I had it off, and it seems to be made onto teh fan itself. You would THINK that it would come off, but I saw no provisions for it, and did not want to damage it in fear of how much a replacment viscous fan is

Again, thnks for your help, and suggestions. Is there anything else that I am not thinking of or missing that ou may have an idea on ?

I also just realized I put this in the '07 and up section

Pretty sure the wiring is an integral part of the clutch. Being that there is a speed sensor in there, it will probably not work again if you take it apart!

OK, thanks! Yeah, did not want to, but thought as a last resort, maybe?

Right, I got that (Have the service manual) And, as you can see, there are ONLY 5 wires, right? Well, at the fan, there ARE 6 wires. And, as mentioned, they ALL match up color for color, with the exception of the 1 extra red wire AT THE FAN. Also, as I mentioned, when I stripped back the blue wire AT THE FAN, it was not a wire, but insulation, so this i what I did:

PLUG side:
Blue
White
Orange
Green
Black

FAN side:
Blue
White
Orange
Green
Black
Red

I hooked up all wires, color for color (obviously) EXCEPT the blue wire. As, again, AT THE FAN, the blue wire is insualtion. So, I took the blue wire AT THE PLUG, and hooked it up to the extra wire, the red one AT THE FAN. And I just folded back the blue insulation.

Now, as you already know, my fan clutch is engaged at all times now, so obviously something is wrong.

Thanks guys for you help. What am I missing though?

Well, if it can be figured out what you did wrong, and how you did it, it would be great.

You could put a manual override switch in the cab like the big trucks..

"off/auto/override" Neato,, now to figure out what happened, LOL.

You know, THAT is a good idea!

I guess there is that little problem of not knowing what is wrong however
