Anyone ever have a Turbo fail in a CTD
Ever have one fail from coking? Because of cool down problems? I've never seen or heard of one failing from not being cooled down on either this site or the TDR, or from any of my friends that own CTD's and abuse them, pulling heavy loads with them and just shut them off :'( anyone???

I'm certainly no expert on the subject, but am probably as middle-of-the-road **** as anyone in treatment of my trucks. My '91 was sold with nearly 120,000 miles on it, at least a third of that mileage towing. I used good oil, changed regularly - and while I would wait a little longer to shut the engine down after a hard pull, that was about it. I always carefully monitored the externally visible condition of the turbo wheel when servicing the air fliter (K&N) - mainly due to all the K&N haters hype about oil and dirt leakage onto the turbo blades - there never was any, and the turbo shaft itself ALWAYS spun smoothly and had no more looseness at 118,000 miles than it did when brand new, as far as *I* could detect - and still put out the same 22 psi boost under load...

Thanks guys for the responses. I was just wondering after reading another thread with members concerned about shut down tempertures (which you should be). Looks like these things are designed for the idiot that does not pay attention. I guess that's a good thing

That's odd. I've seen two stock turbo's fail on a stock truck. (Different trucks)

This company is a hotshot/tool rental company here in South Texas. They have several '94-'97 Power Strokes with 250+K on them, and two with over 300K. They've had general maintanence for a Ford (Injectors, Manifolds, etc.)

The Dodges were a favorite for the guys who pulled the 50' Trailers, but the guys who ran around light or empty didn't like them.

The two trucks that had turbo's fail were both 2001's. One had the turbo fail, and replaced, the other had the turbo fail, then an oil pump broke. The diagnosis from Cummins was a broken Oil Pump Shaft (not the pump itself)

BTW, The Dodge's are Cab&Chassis H.O.'s

Merrick Cummings Jr
