Alternator charging intermittently on startup

When I start up my 2008 dodge 2500 I can hear a solenoid/switch clicking in and out for the first 3 minutes. When it clicks, I've noticed the alt gauge goes way down like the alternator isn't charging. When it clicks back again the alternator starts to charge again. After the first 3 minutes this stops and everything is fine.

Is this normal procedure or is there a switch or something ready to quit?

Thanks for you help!!!

Thanks!

Thank you for your fast replies. This is my first diesel vehicle. I've operated trucks, tractors and other heavy equipment but don't ever remember an intake heater like this.

Thanks!!
