All wheel drive?

The Official Dodge Site shows 4HI as AWD, and 4LO as part-time 4WD, did they change it for 07?

My take on AWD is that you can use it on dry pavement.

Can someone explain the difference?

Click on the 4 wheel link at the top right, then on Transfer case.

That woudl be great if it was true. AWD can be used anytime on any surfaces!

They say AWD in the little animation about the transfer case. It would be very cool if it is really true. I suspect it may be a marketing person that doesn't know any better made an error. An AWD system is much more complicated. It has to have a way of splitting power front to rear and allowing for different driveshaft speeds front to rear. Usually this involves a viscous link or clutches. Not sure how reliable this would be with 650 lb-ft of torque pulling heavy loads.

Wiggs can probably add more on this, but the Lambo's have AWD with tons of power (not pulling heavy loads) but there are vehicles with AWD systems in applications such as fire fighting. I think Oshkosh makes some.

I'm not saying it couldn't be done. Just a lot of engineering and expense. Check out the new Audi Q7 diesel which has 500Hp and 737 LB-ft of torque. http://www.worldcarfans.com/news.cfm...2-tdi-revealed

The Lambo used a viscous couplerl but I through away the whole front end driveline, drive shaft, torque tube, diff, etc.! 60 more HP to the ground and 300lbs. shaved off!!!! OOOOH YEAH BABY!

I bet it could be done; but I think the comment that some tech guy doesn't know the difference is the most likely explanation.

Somebody <Not me> should drive theirs in 4HI until it breaks and then tell them that it's covered cause the website says AWD.

Maybe AWD has come to be interpreted as Full Time Four Wheel Drive, but it doesn't explicitly say "full time". Full time means all the time and AWD really just means all wheels get power. It's a marketing thing or a name they can't really be called on, but if it doesn't specifically say "full time four wheel drive" then don't bank on it being full time, or try to blame Dodge for damage.

The last time a salesman told me it had AWD I asked him why they would put power to the spare. When he got a little attitude going I asked him if the spare was a wheel or not. Well is it AWD or not? That might have been the same guy that told me I'd get 30 MPG with a Cummins.

My 07 C&C owners manual says "4H - Additional traction for loose, slippery road surfaces only" also "This transfer case is intended to be driven in the 2-wheel drive position (2H) for normal street and highway conditions such as dry hard surfaced roads." More .." Driving in the 4H and 4L positions on dry hard surfaced roads may cause increased tire wear and damage to the driveline components."

I'll leave mine in 2H on the road.
