6.7 vs. 5.9
Guys:
I have an 03 SO 3500 srw Laramie with a 47 RE transmission. The truck, with99,400 miles, is bone stock. The only problem I've ever had involved replacing
a tail light bulb. Running empty I get about 20 mpg. Pulling an 11,000 lb
fifth-wheel I get around 10-11 mpg. My problem, I can't run with the big boys when pulling the trailer.
Yesterday, I drove a 2500 D-Max and a 2500 Laramie. The acceleration and braking is amazing on both trucks considering that my truck does not have
an exhaust brake.
Should I trade down from a 3500 to a 2500? Chevy wants $27,500 and Dodge
wants $21,500. I think Chevy is out.
I know my truck can be "modded" but I can see 7-8 thousand dollars plus new
tires and shocks.
Thanks for any feed back.

For the past 9 years now, I have been completely happy with the Dodge wrapper. Now my bother on the other hand, and even myself back in the day have had nothing but problems with Ford. I'll take the Dodge wrapper any day, thank you.
im gonna keep my 5.9. its been overall a good truck and the 6.7 just doesnt appeal to me. I will always be partial to the cummins. I just think the 5.9 does more of what I want. im not interested in the emissions. I know it had to be put on but I think it will ruin the diesel market at some point
You say that you think emissions will ruin the diesel market at some point. Having said this, have you realized that the only reason that more people in the United States don't buy diesels because they think they are dirty? That is a fact, and if somehow we can convince the public that they are cleaner (which they are) then how would that hurt the diesel market? The logic escapes me.
Back to the original post..........I have owned both and am not gonna bash either one.........all I can say is the 6.7 seems to me to have more seat of the pants power than the 5.9 had..........probably why the 6.7 gets worse (not alot less) mpg than the 5.9..........but , I bought mine for the 6 sp. auto and eb......cause I tow pretty heavy (sig) alot of the time, and up and down mountains............all that said........look at it this way ........sooner or later they will have the emission stuff fixed..........we're all gonna have to deal with it sooner or later, anyway........I've not had any problems with any thing (knock on wood) so far..........on either truck.........I had a quad tow box on the 5.9 (65hp/165tq) and I think the 6.7 has the same power without the box...........plus the trans. and exhaust brake.........that sealed the deal for me.........I love my truck.......and wouldn't go back.........sorry 5.9ers

well im new here but ill give my 2 cents.in my humble opnoun the 5.9 compared to the 6.7 with the 68re is not even a comparison.my 68re gets the job so much better in the hills compared to my old 48re .theres alot more usable rpm now due to the 6 speed. my 6.7 runs like a 5.9 with a chip on it.all in all there both great.but i wouldnet even think about going backwards..also the the bully dog ive had on there a couple of months is awsome on the 6.7.and the eb is iceing on the cake!!
6.7
If I posted on this topic before, I will post again. I have 3850mi on my 08, and it will be a month in service tomorrow. In the past I have personally owned and put many miles on one 3rd gen, five 2nd gen, and one 1st gen Cummins Dodge 3/4 and one ton's. In the mean time I have owned, driven and sold 7 other Cummins Dodges. I was not keen on the 6.7 until I owned one. It is so much better than the others I have owned it is not even in the same school, much less class. I have a log of every tank and fill up so far in this truck and will post it one of these days, but it is only getting beat in the mpg's dept by the manual 2wd trucks that i personally owned, and actually beating the 3rd gen 2wd manual. MPG's are relative, but I still drive the same roads and pull the same trailers I have always pulled, and fill up in the same places. Either way I am very, very pleased with this 08 and would not go back.
Dodge Warranty in Canada
Scotty, I was reading through this thread when I saw you say that Dodge voided your warranty because you exported your truck to Canada. I'm in the process of moving from Texas to Vancouver, and my intent was to buy a new Dodge 3500 Cummins to take up there. Seems to me that Dodge's warranty should be good in North America, especially given the constant cross-border travel between Canada and the US. I'd really appreciate your thoughts/experiences with trying to keep the warranty. To me that's half the point of buying a new vehicle. Thanks...

To add a little to your post, and to tell all the 6.7 owners this is not directed at any of them that are happy with their trucks, two of our dealerships down here where I live are having alot of serious warranty issues with the DPF's, the new water cooled turbos going bad along with numerous "driveability" and computer problems some of which it seems Dodge does not have a answer for. I wish all the owners of these new 6.7's good luck, but I am still glad I have a 5.9.

If you export the truck from the country of origin its warranty will be void.
Canada to the US is the same, no cross border warranty

Mines an early 07 and it's been great. I got mine in April 07 and it's been back for 2 re-flashes and a blown speaker. I think Dodge is doing better than GM in the issues department. Go to dieselplace.com and see all the limp mode and DPF issues with the 07 and 08's. I have over 20,000 miles so far and love the truck.
