6.7 6 speed manual clutch 4WD 1 ton cab chassis

My truck has 42k miles. The clutch slips very badly in 5th and 6th gears. This is a periodic problem and only happens under heavy acceleration. My question is (Is there any adjustment that the dealer can do or do I need to replace the clutch?) I am having the truck in the shop next week for some scheduled maintenance and the exhaust brake switch. I am going to have them replace clutch unless someone tells me different. The dealer does not seem to help a whole lot so I thought I would ask the "real" experts my beloved diesel truck resource brothers. Thank You!!!!!!

Yes, it sounds like your clutch is toast. Your not considering putting another stock clutch in it again are you Put in a South Bend clutch so the next one will last

The stock clutch is pretty weak, I had the same in my 06 2500 2wd and it wouldn't take the performance program on the super chips programmer. I had to be careful on the tow program or it would slip there too. It has enough to hold the stock power. I wonder if the exhaust brake you have might be putting too much on that weak clutch?

If you have a Cummins turbo-diesel engine and the G56 manual transmission (sales code ETH, ETJ, and DEG respectively), and built on or before November 09, 2006 (MDH1109XX)
I had to replace the dual mass flywheel, pressure plate, clutch disc, and plate attaching bolts. Clutch System May Over-Adjust Causing Difficulty Engaging Transmission Gear.
Did you ever experience difficulty attempting to engage a manual transmission gear.
This may be due to the self-adjusting mechanism in the clutch system. The self-adjusting clutch mechanism may over-adjust (forward adjust). This condition most often will occur within the first 1,000 miles of vehicle operation. When the clutch pressure plate over-adjusts, the plate diaphragm fingers
appear to be flat (collapsed) and marks on the clutch disc will be present due
to contact with the collapsed plate diaphragm fingers.
Qty. Part No. Description
1 52104721AF Flywheel, Engine Dual Mass
1 52104724AD Kit, Clutch (includes: Clutch Disc and Pressure Plate)
8 06036096AA Bolts (Flywheel to Pressure Plate

I have stock power. And yes I have an original cab chassis as noted in your quote. Does replacing these parts with factory originals solve the problem?

I do not have the exhaust brake yet. It is going to the dealer this week so hopefully we will know something then. I am thinking there is something wrong with the rear end that is causing the clutch to slip sometimes.

I had 1250 km's (760 miles) when the stock new fangled clutch started slipping with the truck empty. DC wont admit it but the service manager said they had a few with problems from the factory and there was an update on the units. If she calves again SBC like my 01 still going no problems. PK

With the dual mass flywheel setup, unless the dealer replaces the clutch for free under warranty, I would not put in a stock replacement.

When mine goes, I'll probably put in a South Bend OFE. It's expensive, but from what I hear it should be a not-too-grabby clutch that will hold up to tons of miles of heavy towing with stock or not too heavily modified power. The parts kit comes with solid flywheel, clutch disk, heavy duty pressure plate, pilot bearing, and release bearing. They recommend you also order their heavy duty linkage...

Good luck with it.

Sounds like he just had a bad clutch. With stock power, he should have no problem. With less power on the cab chassis, he should not be slipping with a stock clutch. I had the same 6sp in my 06 with over 100K towing and about 100hp more(superchips tow mode) with cruise on it would not slip on any hill. If I found myself trying to add speed with a heavy trailer on anything more than a 5% it would slip- but that was with much more torque than our stock depowered chassis cabs come with.

Just my $.02 the stock clutch is weak, but the one in this post seems have something wrong with i if he is running stock.

Check your warranty book that came with your truck. Clutch will probably only be covered under a 12,000 mile adjustment warranty. My '06 DMF lasted about the same time(49k). I put in a SBC OFE. Find out about the coverage before you leave it with the dealer. Lary (Top) can get you a real good deal on the SBC. The TSB referred to in an earlier post does make mention of the problem, but specifies very low mileage. I'd hate to see your truck stuck on a lift for any time length just to have the same problem come back. The DMF is good at taking the shock off of the tranny, but so is double clutching.

My dad had to put a new clutch in his 6.7 but this was due to my grandfather moving wagons on gravel in 4th gear with his foot on the clutch the whole time. You could smell the smoked clutch from a good distance away. Dodge replace the clutch for free, but make sure that who ever drives your truck knows the shift pattern.

Just got it back from the dealer. New clutch, new dual mass flywheel, new u-joint, and I had the exhaust brake switch installed. They covered the flywheel and u-joint under warranty. Just a side note on the exhaust brake installation. they called to tell me it was going to take much longer because of some problem with the wiring on the truck. When ever I picked it up I noticed a water in fuel indicator on the dash during normal start up when all your dash indicators automatically come on for a few seconds. This light has never come on before during start up as if it almost was not connected before. Go figure. I learn something new and different about this truck every day. Frankly I am tired of spending money on it. The (3) other Dodges that I still own all seem to be problem free other than normal maintenance items. If they would make a truck that was twice as reliable I would pay 15k more for it with out blinking an eye. I dont even need more than my 300hp. I would even trade in 50hp for more longevity and less repairs!
