2008 RAM 2500 68RFE won't shift past 4th - CEL on, codes P0700 P0871
Hi everyone!
I'm new to the Cummins crowd, but I used to own two Ford Powerstrokes (with the last one being bulletproofed, SCT tuned, Precision Industries torque converter, custom exhaust, all the Sinister goodies, etc)... So I guess I'm trying to say that I've been around diesels a bit.
Here's my problem... I recently bought a 2008 Ram 2500 with the 6.7I Cummins (the truck is totally stock except for suspension lift and tires). The transmission recently started to act up. It wouldn't shift past 4th gear, CEL came on, and the codes read P0700 and P0871. Dealer said new transmission, but I wasn't going to pay what they wanted. So I took it to a highly recommended Transmission shop here in Fayetteville, NC. They agreed with the dealer, but rebuilt it instead and put a Precision HD billet torque converter in it (different company than Precision Industries). FYI - They said that 5th and 6th gears were destroyed when they took it apart. So it all made sense.
Anyway, it ran fine for about 50 miles or so, and then the same problem happened all over again (same codes and won't shift past 4th).
Now the interesting thing is that the truck seems to reset itself after sitting a day or two and it will drive fine for about an hour or so. The Transmission shop feels that there's an electrical short somewhere; they also say that the Tow Haul button appears to be way to "touchy" mean that it will easily come on with a slight tap (maybe the source of the short?).
I have read through some of the forums on here and found a similar example where the recommendation was a that the valve body assembly needed to be replaced (not just the solenoid). I've tried to contact the forum member to ask for more details about the fix and if it truly was the problem.
I've already got $3000 into the trans rebuild/new torque converter. The Tow Haul replacement part is $200. I don't mind spending more on a valve assembly, but I really would like some advice? Anyone ever dealt with such an issue?
Please help.
