08 tranny acting up - please help.. should i fix or sell?

Guys, really would appreciate some help.

I have a clean non-worker 08 QC 4x4 auto long bed with 165k.

2 things:

1. about a month ago i pulled onto freeway and it wouldn't go into over-drive once i got up to speed (not towing). I eventually pulled over, turned it off, re-started, and it worked thereafter. No dash lights, etc.

2. last weekend, i was towing my dad's old 1/2 ton chevy in for service, and it felt like my tranny started slipping (rpm's up, limited corresponding forward motion). I also had some burnt-fluid smell through the vents. I pulled over, dumped the load, and drove on home empty another 90 miles, it was perfect, and has been since. No dash lights, etc.

///

So i'm thinking my tranny is about to go. I don't want it to go violently...
Is this how they usually go? slowly with some slipping under-load?

I haven't taken to dealer b/c it's showing no symptoms that they would notice.

If it was an easy/cheap fix, i'd probably fix/keep. Otherwise, might sell/trade.

Thoughts?
thnx
