Will an SBC aftermarket clutch void drivetrain warranty?
Will an SBC aftermarket clutch void drivetrain warranty?
My dealer happens to be a good one. He said that he would put my clutch in, but if there was a problem down the line, DC will void drivetrain warranty. I have an 05 so I think it's a 7/70,000 warranty. I have 25,000 on her now and need a new clutch and don't want a stocker on there not to mention the DMF that we all love so much. He told me he has seen guys buy a new truck and it goes straight to the service bays for a new after market clutch. What do you guys do?
I believe they dont cover the clutch or components under warranty. that would be the only drivetrain components that i could seem the voiding even if they did cover them. I cant see a clutch harming any other drivetrain component. But they will definatly ask you why you are putting one in. And the anwser is....The DMF is crap.
As with any modifications to our trucks, you need to do them, assuming that you will become your own warranty station, in case the dealer refuses to cover it. If they will cover any issues with the drivetrain with an aftermarket clutch in, then consider yourself blessed. That being said, if I needed a new clutch at 25k, I would consider my driving habits, and ask why???? But, since you say you need one, there is no reason not to upgrade to a nicer unit.

Well the reason being I need a new clutch is that with the 315's coupled with an Edge Juice w/ Attitude started slipping it slightly at first every now and then if I got on it too hard, now I cant use any settings higher than stock because of the slippage. My dealer also said to consider this: The G56 is made from aluminum, not steel like the earlier trannys. DC in their infinite wisdom felt that there could be reliability issues down the line from the less stronger aluminum. They decided to use a DMF to help control stress input from the internals thereby sparing the aluminum housing any stress that could crack or break it. Basically the only reason they use the dual mass flywheel on the G-Units is to save it from a catastrophic failure. He said that some people at DC say that removal of the DMF with an aftermarket non DMF will certainly cause a failure at some point, therefore as soon as the mod is made, warranty goes out the window. Has anybody heard of this and could lend credibility to these statements?
Dodgezilla04, I am going with the MU1947 Con OFE. You say they wont know it's in there. why's that? Everyone I talked to about it says its way different from stock and is really grabby and that I will have to learn how to shift all over again. I have also heard that pedal pressure is a tad harder than stock and you cant hold the clutch in at shutdown to help alleviate the harshness of the Cummins shutdown.
I don't want to lose my warranty (is it 3/36,000 or 7/70,000?) if its the 3/36,000 i probably won't worry about it. My dealer says the part number of the clutch itself has changed from the early G56's so maybe they improved it enough with heavier springs or whatever to hold the mods I have. I just don't want to make a foolish decision and waste my money and have to do it all over again at 40,000K.
Will the G56 handle a non-DMF setup? Do the positive outweigh the negatives? Is the CON OFE too grabby and will it tear up my G-Unit
Is there anyone in the Houston area with a G56 6-speed with the SBC MU1947 CON OFE clutch installed that would let me make a couple of blocks to check it out?
Sorry for all the questions, it's just that I have valued all the opinions I have read over the years on this forum and have made many decisions about my truck as a direct result of the information presented here by fellow members, this being no exception. This is a big deal for me and I have to get a new clutch regardless, so I want to go into it with both eyes wide open.
Thanks guys

I would think the Edge Juice with Attitude would do more to void your drivetrain warranty than the clutch, but it's strictly up to DC's interpretation when a specific situation arises - who knows how the particular DC rep will rule? I would suggest that you be prepared to pay if you've decided that you're gonna play!

i put the same clutch in 2 weeks ago. not grabby when it wears in. pedal pressure is the same. after you get her broken it, the only time you notice the difference is when it holds at power levels that the stocker wouldnt. peter and the gang did their homework over at SBC. I am extremely happy with my ofe.
Any updates anyone can add?
Well I have had the box with my clutch sitting in my garage for about 4 months or so. Still debating about my warranty. I have 31,000 on her now and it has a few issues I need to take care of like A/C blowing warm on pass side, blower motor on its way out, ac odor, flash and other minor stuff. I need to take it in but I havent decided on the clutch. The stocker wont hold anything above #1 on the Juice and even then I have to baby it or it'll slip. I dont want to lose warranty and I dont want to put another stock clutch in. Has anyone had to deal with a dealer on their G56 with a SBC Con OFE clutch in it? It's a shame all that money on clutch, flywheel, hyd. upgrade just sitting in a box on the floor. I just dont want to lose my whole drivetrain warranty over a clutch. HELP!
I aint skeered!
I just have the worst luck out of anyone I know. My truck has been pretty much trouble free since I owned it (knock on wood
) and I just know that as soon as I put in the clutch, my G56 will grenade or something of that nature just because. And of course DC in their infinite wisdom will say it's because of the clutch, thereby voiding all drivetrain warranty in the process......

Peter e-mailed me and stated that a properly dampened aftermarket clutch will not effect the longevity of the G-56. I feel confident that when mine goes,Peter will supply the best product. Hopefully, that'll be a long time.
