Question Why would it go down?

OK So this is a fuel milage question - I didn't want to mention that in the subject since there are SOOO many of these and I didn't want people to discount this message thinking it was another argument about WHO gets WHAT.....

I don't want to debate WHAT everyone is getting, but what I am wondering is WHY suddenly, at 22,000KM has my milage dropped? I was getting very respectable results at highway speeds. I STILL am happy with the numbers, but they've gone down about 3 MPG - and this is after coming off of Winter fuel, where I expected to see a slight increase! I should have seen a slight increase after the change from winter fuel right? That's what I've read - and since I bought the truck last fall, this is my first seasonal change to compare it to.

Last weekend I changed the air filter & fuel filter and that made no difference at all. I'm doing an oil change very shortly (24,000KM) - Old oil shouldn't affect milage should it?

Just a thought here. Have you checked your air pressure. I find a large decrease in fuel mileage if my tires are underinflated. The change in temperature can affect pressure.

I've kept the tire pressure at 50PSI since I got the truck & I check regularly - never been any significant change.

I don,t know what tires you have, but my 17 inch michlens say 80lbs max cold PSI.They were at 60lbs and looked low.Have you tried and fuel additives, such as howes, stanadyne performance formula??.coobie

Have you looked at several tanks of fuel or just one? Have your driving habits changed any? Did you change your truck in any way? If this is under identical conditions as before and averaged over several tanks of fuel then a trip to the dealer would be in order.

Temperature changes can result in mileage changes too. Have you added any tool boxes or weight? 3MPG is not worth worrying about IMHO. Just drive it!

Not sure its revelant on the 'new' common rail engines, but if I let my fuel filter go too long between changes, my milage will start to drop. Let that happen this winter, difference of almost 2 mpg one tank to next, same station, same roads, same speeds ect..., only difference, new fuel filter.

Good luck, @ 1.69 a gal 3 mpgs is a large difference, my wallet tells me so.. LOL

EDIT:

OK I'm blind and blah blah blah... just re read your post and found where you just changed you fuel filter.... SORRY for not listening... been hanging around the wife to long.. .

Right could'a picked up dirt at the pump during winter to spring changeovers. Have you checked the odometer against a measured mile like from mile-marker to mile-marker? Nat

Coobie - My truck came from the dealer with 35 PSI in all tires They looked very obviously low (especially at the front) - I put them up to 50 & they looked OK - I put the rear tires up to 70 recently when I had to haul some gravel, but put them back to 50 when I was done. That's what I've always had them at - Should I keep the pressures higher when not towing/no load in the bed?

I've just recently put in some additives, but haven't done much driving so I cannot say if that has made a difference.

Did my driving habits change? Not really.

The ONLY change I can think of - And I never really paid much attention to it until now - is this: The station where I fill up was sold to new owners a few months ago - its an independant station - I have no idea who they get their fuel from and no idea IF they changed suppliers!

There are three places selling diesel in my town - I guess I'll try one of the others for a while & see if that makes a difference.
