I used to run it until they changed it to CJ4, now I run Valvoline Premium Blue 15w-40 (CF4) ... for the same reasons sprinter17 said. I read a great independent test on here (?) a while back about lubrication but sorry can't find it now. I'll keep looking.

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Ran Rotella 15-40 with no problems. Got a deal on 5-40 and changed. Had the oil analyzed at 5000 mile intervals out to 20000 mile and was still very good. Changed out at 20K and will continue running that long on a 2000 3500 that pulls very loaded 25 foot gooseneck on Interstates most of time. With 216K it uses very little oil after changover. Never had any noticable smells with either.

I run Rotella 15-40 Dino and never had a problem for many years in both CTD and Power Jokes.

I finally found it here you go, lot of reading, but page 59 somes it up, the CJs are on the bottom, "good for garbage trucks and fleets"

The first week I read this I panicked and went out and bought 3gals. of WallyWorld oil.

Sprinter17,

Thank you for providing the link, that was very enlightening. It is nice to see a real world report with facts and opinions from a guy in the oil industry. As a long time Rotella T user, reading that is enough to make me switch to Valvoline Premium Blue. I can't see any good reason not to make the switch.

Your welcome, I figured if someone took the time to do the analysis without bias ,and knows how to read it, I'll listen.I find it interesting that some of the good oils aren't that expensive, but have all that's needed to protect your engine pretty good. I don't think the CJ oils will just destroy an engine, but I like thinking I'm doing all I can to preserve mine, and as long as I can still find the CI oil, I'll use it.

That article had me running around to all the stores purchasing as much CI-4 Plus I could get my hands on. I am good for the next 3 oil changes, but after that, don't know. Right now Wally World around here has some CI-4 Plus Rotella 5-40 for about $17.00 a gal, which is probably why it is still sitting on the shelves. Has anyone run the 5-40 during the summer months?

I got an email from shell a few months back that said the 5w-40 syn will be changing to the CJ formulation but didn't state when. So I have also stocked up. And yes I have ran the 5w-40 Syn all summer and towed, and that's during a Arizona summer.

I've got 149,000 on Rotella 15-40 and haven't had any worries yet. Change every 5K. Keep it in year around.

that's just it though ... they have just recently changed it to CJ4 for the DPF equipped trucks and that's why I switched ... apples to oranges.

I'm running the new Rotella and will continue to do so. It's cheap, easy to find and i'll never keep a truck long enough to realize the benefits of stockpiling CI-4+ oil.
Pretty soon i'm sure it will all be CJ-4, it's hard enough to find the old oil already so I can't be bothered to waste my time stockpiling and driving around just to find the old stuff.

My truck is coming up on the first oil change. If I am reading these threads correctly, the Rotella Synthetic 5w-40w/CI-4 is better to use than the Rotella 15w-40W/CJ-4. Is it true that you can not go back to regular oil once you start using synthetic?
