When to replace Timing Belt or adjust valves

Was wondering about when the timing belt replacement interval and or any other internal maintenance I have watch out for on my 2006 cummins 5.9. Coming up to 200 000 km at this point.

No timing belt to worry about. I think the valve lash is checked every 150000 miles but I'm not 100% on that.

Thanks Tedonlin150. Hard to believe how little maintenance this engine requires and just keeps on lugging.

Yep, 150k on valve adjustment. My first adjustment was well over the 100k mark (03 year model) and only 1 valve was slightly out of spec.

I'm at 215K and still original lash and running like a swiss watch.... knock on wood! Belt's original too... I wonder if I should put a new Gatorback belt on there? Hmmm.

Maintenance? You mean there's a way to get into the engine compartment to do things in there??? Is there a hidden lever somewhere to pull or something?

Change the belt and keep the old one for a spare. Don't buy a new one and keep for a spare, you need to know that it will fit and was not given the wrong one, as it happened to me. Lucky I changed it at home.

My manual says to adjust the valve lash at 1115k miles. I am there but haven't done it yet.

What others have said... if you like turning wrenchs to fix stuff, this engine isn't for you... The only issues I have had with this engine are self inflicted by me... It got to the point that I bought a second car to wrench on because I knew that if I didn't I would be in the same boat of some of the others with dual pumps, twins, etc

I HEAR you on that one! "Wrench's" always like tinkering. If you have a good 5.9, do the oil and filters, it's like watching paint dry

Wow a million miles before it needs a valve adjustment!

I really don't pay too much attention to the manual in regards to the valves. I first adjusted mine at 45K and it made a world of difference in noise and seemed to run better too. This has been confirmed many times over on other trucks in the various Cummins forums. For me, I adjust valve lash every 50K.
