What's this sound??
When pulling my trailer (around 8000 lbs. or more at the times) going slow uphills it makes this real weird sound. It sounds like a fan, and it makes the sound as I accelerate. When I take my foot off the pedal, it goes away. It's happened twice now...once on a dirt road, and another on a muddy, snowy road in 4X4 and both going uphill, slowly. I think it's just getting hot. It'll be in 2nd or 3rd (auto tranny). Also, I''m only gettting 9-11 towing according to the computer...rather dissapointing.

So I take it this is not normal, and no one has heard of this before? I'd like to avoid the dealer, as they're complete idiots.

Re:What's this sound??
Well, you do have a clutch type fan. At highway speeds, the fan will freewheel, and you won't hear it, But if you're pulling loads, and going slow enough, the clutch will lock up the fan, and it'll start to roar. You may notice it in the morning when first starting out too. It takes a little bit of running to distribute the fluid in the clutch before the roar goes away. I don't pull, but I have had it lock up on hot days in around-town driving. When it comes on, there's no mistake about it. As far as mileage, how many miles do you have on it?

Re:What's this sound??
Thanks...only 1700 miles. Pulled my trailer about 4 times now and it only happens when going slow...bottom end grunt work. I'd get out and check, but like I said, it does stop when I take he foot off the pedal.<br> Get only 16-17 MPG when empty (per computer); guessing it'll get better as it breaks in? Still better than my old '01 Chevy 5.3 though.

Oh, you got a long way to go before things loosen up. You'll see your mileage go up gradually. Still, I don't think our trucks are good "coasters". Mine dies when I take my foot out of it. My old 89 Chevy pickup seems to coast for a mile. Wonder if it's the same with the 03's

Re:What's this sound??
This sound happened before and after I had my recall done. I was puttin' around a parking lot slowly yesterday, after 60 hwy miles, and it did it again. I'm quite sure it's a fan cooling things off....I was just paranoid I guess. Thanks.
