Bought the 2004 Dodge after 04 VW Golf wrote off, Really like driving the Dodge. Did this in August last year. At the same time started driving the old Jetta turbo diesel 315,000 k runs good cheap etc. Then time to renew insurance, oh my VW was approx. $1000 for the year, that buys a lot of fuel right now it is 4.39/gal. so VW sits, Drive the Dodge as Vw insrance costs pay for alot of fuel. 2wd truck will do 30mpg. at 60mph. when you drive "nice" Oh did i mention that i like driving the Dodge!

Yup. Keep temps below 600F, speed below 60-mph and intake manifold pressure below 6-psi.

Funny how things like that change your perspective...
Same way I feel. I don't want my tombstone to read "Killed because he was trying to save on fuel".

Mass wins! Plus, by the time I buy a fuel efficient car, pay for licensing, insurance and maintenance how much have I saved and how long will it be to realize those savings...

I could drive my '97 Jeep wrangler and save a few $ per fill up but my truck gets better fuel economy. The lift and lack of aerodynamics really gives the Jeep some drag. So even at 3K Lbs more the truck is still my daily driver.

Would it even be possible to have something like they do with gas engines and under certain conditions they turn off cylinders. They did it for the 3 cylinder high idle, why not when you're just cruising on level ground with light throttle? Would it put too much load on the engine though? These things have PLENTY of torque.

Have any of the electronics guys (MADS, HS etc) mentioned being able to program that?

Unless you can keep the valves closed, the pumping losses are tremendous.

To save fuel these days...I hate to admit it, but the wife's Prius is racking up the miles. 50 - 52 mpg, and only $30 to fill it, versus $150 to fill the truck.

I did not buy my truck just to park it to drive a beater. I drive the truck everyday and just moan about the fuel prices.
