If it is the 235 model it's not an HO, it will likley also have a 47re which may require attention before you throw much power at it.

It sounds like you have an early 04 California model SO truck. If it was built after 1-1-04...you have an 04.5 truck.

Here is a break down of the motors and trannys based on year:

2003 S.O. Federal Emissions: 250HP/460lb.ft. Available with NV4500 or 47RE
2003 S.O. Calif. Emissions: 235HP/460lb.ft. Available with NV4500 or 47RE
2003 H.O. Federal Emissions: 305HP/555lb.ft. Only available with NV5600
2003.5 The 47RE was replaced by the 48RE automatic transmission and available with the H.O.

2004 S.O. Calif. Emissions: 235HP/460lb.ft. Available with NV4500 or 48RE
2004 H.O. Federal Emissions: 305HP/555lb.ft. Available with either NV5600 or 48RE

2004.5 (50 state legal) 325HP/600lb.ft. Available with either the 48RE or NV5600

2005 (50 state legal) 325HP/610lb.ft. Available with either the 48RE or NV5600

2005.5 The NV5600 replaced with the G56 6spd manual gearbox.

the motor was mfg on 10-6-03 so what do i have? it has a cat on it and it also has the electronic waste gate. If its 235 Hp then i could put 100 hp to it make it a "HO" without any problems right? Or would i need to change/Mod something?

Yes, just be careful how you MOD. You want to be aware of your EGTs, and not burn up the 48RE. Gauges and a Smarty would be my recommendation (or a mild box with timing).

The famous 235hp Cali trucks do have a cat and were mandatory in 5 states including California and New York in 03 and early 04.

You have the 48re.

I find that the SOs seem to run cooler than what others report with their HOs. That being said, You still will want an EGT gauge at the least. I run a Quadzilla box on 65 hp without heat issues. It does throw a code on occasion though. I will be looking into the smarty next.
