Question Don't have a truck yet but have a question about the fuel pumps

I spoke with a service guy today at a dealership and he told me it is $2800 to replace the fuel pump and lift pump on a 2002

Since I am still searching and don't have a truck yet I have to ask... why? Why are they so expensive? Anyone have a picture of these things so I can see what you get for $2800? I am used to cars where even high end pumps only run $650.

Can these be purchased elsewhere for considerably less or as a reman? All ears here.

The injector pump is the pricy one. Lift pump here is around $400 (Cdn).

Why? Because they can

The lift pump can be done away with an aftermarket set-up.

$2800 is a steal for both... I was quoted $3400 just for the injection pump w/install from Dodge last week.

The injection pump completely controls whether your truck runs or not. It is fed by the lift pump. Lift pump failures are quite common because of the "position" of the lift pump.... dead lift pumps lead to injection pump failures and stranded dodge trucks.

btw, you can buy a reman.ed injection pump (they don't make new injection pumps) for around $1000(give or take a few hundred) from different places.

If you're going to buy a 24V, take the truck to a Dodge dealer and have them run the DTC's before even sitting down to sign paperwork. After purchase, put on an aftermarket fuel system and a fuel pressure gauge and you shouldn't have to worry about losing an injection pump.

For stock or slightly bombed you can replace banjo bolts(bigger I.D)$50-60CDN, or Scotty Fuel Smart fuel System $200 CDN. Banjo kit probably best for stock to mild chip. Scotty smart fuel system upgrade probably best for stock to medium bombing or lots more(Do a search for members using, and their HP/Torque numbers AND OPINION) then decide what you want(do it right 1st time). Fass probably overkill and costlier($800-900 CDN)unless building big HP/ Torque #'s(JMO) with pump wire tap. Check Fuel pressure of lift pump(you can rig up your own quite easily) and monitor under load no less than 5-6psi bare minimum. Add fuel conditioner with Lubricity additive every tank, keep tank at least around 1/2+ for proper cooling of pumps, and you should be good for long time depending on bombs and money you want to spend.

Pump should cost $1300. Labor at $60/hr for 8 hrs puts you at $1780 total. Anything more is a ripoff in my book.

Try www.cumminsstuff.com if you need a VP44. Much cheaper than dealer.

Lift pump is $160 from Cummins, much more from Dodge.

Heck, you can almost buy a new P-PUMP for $2800!!!!
