When my front driver-side axle u-joint failed it sounded like a rock caught in a hubcap-loud enough you could hear it clearly with the window rolled down.

where are you located? I'll drive by and let you listen ahhahahahaha, rattles clunks depending on which one it is, or just taps and can be heard as you drive by a concrete highway barrier, wall any thing a sound willbounce off of.

If you feel a vibration then I would just quickly have a gander under the truck and try and rock the drive shaft if it wiggles lots time to replace them.

The u-joint immediately behind the carrier bearing on my truck was vibrating/shuddering as I left from a stop. When I checked it for movement I found it wasn't loose at all, but after driving a good distance it was warm to the touch. As I removed it I found it had lost all lubrication but hadn't lost any of the needle bearings, yet. The replacement has a grease fitting on it.
