Weird Trans question

So, I just got the truck in my sig and its my first cummins with an auto and I have a quick question. When I try to shift from park to reverse it physically won't move until I wiggle it and push it back up. Is this a bad thing or a common thing, life was so much easier when I had a manual, lol

I find it to be fairly common on mine as well...

I always make sure I have applied the brake pretty well and pull her down in R. If she doesn't want to come out of park on the first try, I don't fight it. I just simply take my foot of the brake, re-apply, and pull her down in to R again. This always works fine. (as a matter of fact, I don't even think about it anymore)
Just part of having an auto...

Keep in mind that all this takes place with my truck always being parked on a very level driveway. I can't imagine the way she would scream if I were shifting her out of park into reverse on a hill everyday!

Since I'm divorced now and can afford toys, I'm considering garmin internals with a GV. Will the gv be worth the extra 3500$?

I'm going with a complete rebuild kit myself from Garmon's. You say "GV"...what's this? I know that what I'm looking at includes, clutches, VB, input-output shafts, etc...for a little over 5K.
I guess what I'm saying, is that if Jeff suggest it, I would go with it!

I was talking about the gear venders under/overdrive unit, it adds a gear between gears is how I read it. South Texas, I have issues going from park to any gear, once out of park it wont bind up anywhere else.

Try This: When parking, put truck in neutral, Put the parking brake on, take foot off brake and let parking brake catch any truck roll, THEN put truck in park. This will extend life of the parking pawl in addition to making the shift out of park easier.

Sorry to hear that. I guess my issue isn't similar at all.

Two things can cause this, the shift cable brake interlock not functioning correctly and wear on the detent ball in th etop of the VB.

The brake interlock is under the dash on the firewall. Sometimes they just refuse to work correctly anymore or get sticky. A lot of people just remove them to disable it.

The VB wear problem requires removal of the VB and using a Sonnax kit to drill the VB and replace it with a steel bushing that won't wear.

You can narrow the problem area down by disconnecting the shift cable at the tansmission and testing your shifter on the column. If it fixes the problem then likely the issue is in the VB and you will have a hard time move the trans shift lever by hand.

The parking pawl binding can cause things to stick also so run your test where you are level so there is not a lot of bind on the pawl.

DieselCountry85, I have been using Gear Vendors on my trucks, both 5spds and auto's for many years. If you are towing anything they are worth every penny. But look around you can find them for $1500- $2500 on the secondary market. I'm thinking of selling the one off my '98 before selling the truck if interested.
