Voltage regulator blues
Will converting to an external voltage regulator result in tranny problems on an 06 5.9?
My truck started boiling batteries on the way to work this am with the check gauges light on. No codes have been thrown yet.

Can't see how it could, but am curious. Why go to all that bother and not just replace your bad alternator with a new or rebuilt?

First things first, you have or had a bad connection on the battery system, one of the cables was or is corroded, when you clean the terminals, pull the through bolt out of the terminals and clean them both bolt and terminal, as the wire from the alt. attaches along with other wires( grounds and etc. ) ,I had Wally world change oil that was it, but they cleaned the battery cables and left one loose, my step son used the p/u for a while , called and said truck would not start, I went over to jump start the right battery was fried left battery was 1/2, so I did tighten the terminal and managed to jump from drivers side only, had to go to auto zone as wally world was closed, two (2) new batteries and $275. later truck is fine Never trust any one with these batteries, the Alternator charges the passenger side and cross bleeds over to drivers side, ;;

Well,
checked alternator at auto parts and all was good. Checked battery terminals and all was clean and tight. I went online and found an external voltage regulator setup that came with a resistor that fools computer to think battery is charging fine and not set off check engine light. Installed it today and it is now charging at 14.3 volts and the check engine light is off. Wayyyy better than dropping a grand on a new pcm. Drove the truck 40 + miles and everything is good except the grid heater wait to start is staying on. The grid heater cycles and the lights dim as they normally did and quit when you get over 25 mph. The light on the dash stays on.

UPDATE
All lights are now off like they are supposed to be, batteries are charging, grid heater works as it should and the little resistor that came with the external voltage regulator setup is doing its job keeping the check engine light off.
Pretty good $85.00 investment over replacing the PCM.
