Voltage Regulator Help
Voltage Regulator Help
Alright my non intercooled buddies, help me out here. I have a 91 non intercooled truck of my neighbors here that is going to get a tune up, service, overhead etc. Test driving it, I noticed that the lights would flicker real rapidly at a stop and the voltage gauge would read low and fluctuate somewhat as well. First question is, those that have had problems with the voltage regulator, does this seem like this is the problem? Second, where is the regulator mounted at in the non intercooled trucks, and how much is the going price for one? Thanks guys.

Re:Voltage Regulator Help
Any problem I had with lights flickering and gauges bouncing, was from corrosion. Cleande all the connections and no more problems, at 192,000 miles. I'll have to double check later, but it seems like it's mounted on the driver's wheel well.
Re:Voltage Regulator Help
I had flickering lites on my 89 alot... A new regulator would smooth it out for about a year then it would slowly start again. I changed out the alternator and it didn't change it at all. From what I have found, the brand of regulator didn't seem to change it. I had Wilson, Daimler and some other brands but they all did the same thing.
The regulator is mounted on the firewall just above cylinder #6. It has a three prong plug with a spring clasp to hold the plug to the regulator. Buff off the mounting bolts to the regulator as it needs a good ground to sense battery voltage. I used some dielectric grease on the plug as it is right in line with water from off the hood when you open it on a rainy/snowy day. Also clean the battery feed connector at the alternator (the big black wire like the plug at the battery) and make sure all connections are clean.
Some of the guys on the TDR were re-locating the regulator to the side fender walls to get it away from the heat. We were thinking that the location gets too hot from the exhaust and was cooking the regulator. I never did try that solution, but some said it fixed the problem.
I never could get rid of that little flicker in the lites. ???
