Exclamation Vibration & Drone

I just came back from a long trip and found out some interesting things in reference to the vibration and drone problem that a lot of people seem to be having.

The drone and vibration begins around 64mph and maxed out at 67mph and then subsides around 69mph. It does not seem to be RPM related since I can rev the truck in neutral and they do not occur.

I could not notice them when the truck was cold but as it warmed up, they became very noticeable.

I at first did not notice the problems until I had my truck cap installed, i.e. more weight in the back. I also noticed that they were worse with a full tank of gas than on an 1/8th of a tank.

Hope this helps someone figure these problems out!

p.s. I am going to try the zip-tie trick I read about in another post!

I have and 04,3500 with pretty much the same problem except mine happens around 70 mph. Dealer had it all day today, drove 2 new 3500's one was a dually and said they did the same. They told me this was normal exhaust drone. I feel for ya. What is the zip tie trick? I'll be waiting also for some relief.

mine's 04 QC 4x4, 4:10's

just growls & grumbles from 60~65 mph.

keeps you from speeding in town (stay @ 55)
and go faster than 65 on interstate,

it seems to be fading, about 4200 miles on it now,
but yes, it would be nice to make it go away.
dealer said axles are full of fluid.

I talked to my dealer just the other day and he advsied that they have been advised to keep my ticket open till Dodge comes up with a cure. They contacted the powers to be and they were advised that the problem is in the area of the front drive shaft. Not sure what the exact cause is but Dodge engineers are working on it? Will keep hounding them till the problem is fixed!!

I just talked to a shop that has been working with the zone tech and dc eng. They just came up with the fix. They changed the angle of the front drive line. The service mgr said it rides perfect now. I plan to have them look at mine over the weekend.

FWIW I read over on the TDR that a revised driveshaft may be in the works.

can you post the OEM and drone-free pinion angles?

how do you adjust the angle, since it's a 4 link?

i'm thinking it would be worth it to pay 4wd Parts to do it.
drone kills me.

FINALLY FIXED!

Zone tech came through. My truck did not need the driveline angle change. He had the dealer replace the rear drive shaft and the transfer case. Vibration gone!

I'm totally happy with my truck now...

i'm begining to think the drones may be from different sources ...

maybe the new frame types are acting as a tuning fork ...

i have spoke with people who stated the new hose (i've got one) eliminated it ...

i recieved an pm on tdr from a guy who stated front driveshaft ...

took mine off, no change ...

my local shop is going crazy trying to id it, they've replaced a rear end ... rear shaft ... transfer and finally tranny in a vane attempt to reduce a similiar but more pronounced vibration than i have ...

hose killed about 50% of mine ...

everyone keep posting your cures ... maybe it's the brand of tires

The power steering hose. There is a revised part with a weight and a rubber isolator on it to reduce the vibration. Personally, I haven't had this TSB performed on my rig because it doesn't bother me enough to have it tied up in the shop.

I too have the vibration between 62-65 or so. I get a vibration noise in the upper left hand of my dash where the A-pillar, dash, and windshield meet. This only occurs when I have a load on or I am pulling my trailer. I do not have the 72 MPH drone/vibration that so many of you have talked about in the past.

I took the truck to the dealer to get the pcm o-ring and cooling hose recall performed. The dealership took the truck for a test drive, but couldn't feel or hear vibration. They now want me to bring in my trailer for a test drive.

My truck was produced in April of 2003.
