Valve Adjustment
Valve Adjustment
I am going to be adjusting the valves on my 2005. I have 314K miles. This will be the second adjustment. I am doing this myself.
Does the order in which valves are adjusted first matter if I am going to go through each intake and exhaust valve and set each one to proper spec? Also, since everyone is going to be set, do I still need to turn engine so TDC is at 12 o clock? If not, that will save me more time.
One other thing, what would happen if someone set the tolerance spec lets say at .09 or .11 for intake and .19 or .21 for the exhaust instead of .10 & .20? I always wondered this. Hope some diesel techs will chime in. Thank you!

Do a search on the overlap method. It only takes 2 crank positions to do all of them. Set them .010 and .020. Different people will have a different idea of what is tight enough, anyway. The valve springs are puny and I've set them WAY too tight, using a heavy hand. Light drag is good enough. Craig
