you saying to take out timing advance, or run a hotter thermostat?

it's gonna cost me $99 diagnostic fee.

to be honest I am not positive that will fix the issue, but if most are seeing an increase in smoke that means unburnt fuel. The actual reason I am unsure of. It may become an issue as we move into this USLD.

agree, maybe a fact of life.

i bought fuel at a different store today - a truck stop with constant traffic.

what worries me is the blue smoke at idle - looking like burning oil,
but it is full, 3/4 on dip stick.

the smoke increasing all the time worried me too.

but when it sputtered & acted like it was missing, that got me worried.

service writer said she would have an answer today.
they have one diesel tech, and he seems real sharp by the dialogues we have had in past via the service writer.

so if he says no cracked injectors, no broken this that or other,
it'll just smoke.

i have had it on Perf for almost 9 months, and i really miss the power being in stock mode.

my truck is a tool - a Ball Peen hammer, whatever problem i have, i hit it with my truck, and it works out. that extra power on Perf makes it hit harder

hope i can keep it in perf

Engine temp seems to be the big difference in smoke on this new fuel. My 04.5 is running fine now that she is straight piped. I found that the new fuel was carboning up the muffler. Once throttle was applied a big billow of crud would come out as a cloud. I straight piped her and set the valves and havent seen a huff since. You can still see the clean spot on my bumper where I wiped it with my finger. That was 1200 miles ago!
The 95 is still having issues with the new fuel. I havent got around to checking the timing yet but I can tell you that the clouds are happening the the engine temps are at the cooler setting on the thermostat as it cycles. It also runs around 190 tops where the 04.5 runs just over 200 degrees constant.

well, dealer found nothing, except a Hunnert Dollah Bill i was hiding!

he could not get into the ECM to properly troubleshoot it due to the Bullydog programming, even the STAR line told him to leave it alone since i had a box on it, i guess they are tired of trying to reverse engineer what all this aftermarket stuff does.

no codes, no problems, same smoke with or without air filter on.

nothing wrong at all...just a LOT of smoke.

he says it is overfueling way too much,
and only other problem could be a boost leak somewhere, but he did not test for that.

and FWIW, the tranny is almost shot.
the first gear band had never been adjusted before, due to my previous dealership never recommending it, and me not knowing i had a circa 1950's tranny that needs adjusting.

he explained it has about a 2 inch range of adjustment, and i was down to around half a inch left.

he said the slack in the adjustment and the added power probably wore it prematurely.

so...tranny shot, ECM messed up, smoking like a freight train...
what color 06 do you recommmend?

The Bullydog programming blocks DC entry into the ECM?

How can there be no codes set if you're overfueling that much?

How many miles on that first gear band?

I put 220K miles on the bands in the '98 w/ 47RE without significant wear.

My ECM has been to BullyDog's secret underground facility in a corn maze in south Iowa...they re-wrote my ECM for me to solve a mistake i made last year, but did not have my VIN, so did not put it in.

68k miles - been shuddering for last ~20k, but they did not want to drop the pan to adjust it ~10k miles ago, and I did not push the issue,

i needed the fluid & filter changed this time, so just had them do all 3.

Sucks about the tranny. So are ya going to trade her in? See if ya can get the engine temp up and see what happens like we talked about before ya trade her in. I am curious to see what happens. From the way your truck ran I dont think a boost leak is the problem. Maybe another issue but not the main culprit. I have read of a dying trans causing smoke but if they adjusted it I dought that its the problem either. Cycle the key a few times and see if ya popped a code. Check the fluids and all electrical connectors. Wouldnt hurt to pull the valve cover for a quick peek. Its only a couple bolts and takes all of 5 minutes tops. Of course this envolves getting a little dirt on your hands Never know. It may just be a stupid little problem that is a cheap fix.

By the way I am partial to graphite for an 06. Go figure.

no codes with the Bullydog code reader.

i gotta watch my temps some, see if it is running considerably cooler.

nah, no need to trade it in yet.
just got fed up with it.

was $304, 100 diagnostic fee, ~125 tranny labor & parts, $75 alignment.

i think i will let it ride a few more months, get some use out of that $300, then go to myrtle beach on a Saturday evening and trade it in :-)

It's the fuel. Moved from Cali to AZ. Cali fuel was not ULSD yet, WOT pulling 8K w/o smoke from Cental Coast to Phoenix. First tank of AZ ULSD, smoked like a broke injector (fixed tractors for years). Stanadyne helped a ton, but still a small amount of smoke. Milage is worse on ULSD. How ULSD helps is still a mistery.

Was IAT nasty - here's a thread i started to make folks aware:

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...d.php?t=117783

but yeah, still smokes on ULSD more than it did before ULSD.
MPG down, and it does seem to be running ~10 degreess cooler - just before the 2 on the gauge, instead of between 2 and 0 on the 200
