K&N FIPK guys - clean your IAT or else $100?

my truck was SMOKING ...i mean at a stop lite, it was wrapping around the cab & hood, and on the loud pedal, it was POURING COAL.

took to dealership, was $100 diagnostic fee.
they had it 2 days,

could not figure it out.

Rob C figured out it was my IAT coated in gunk
look in my gallery at how the IAT sets off the side, and gunk drips down thru the filter, straight on it.

sprayed it with brake cleaner (contact parts cleaner) then computer compressed air, let dry hour, runs like champ!

MPG back up, got regular lite smoke that is prolly ULSD resulrt

Amassing what a little oil residue will do in the wrong place Glad to hear that ya are up and running again. So are ya going to switch over to the PVC setup instead?

Where did the gunk come from?
What kind of gunk was it?

Sounds like a cheap way to get lots of coal rollin'

I am guessing that it was oil residue off of the small K&N filter. His setup has a large air filter for fresh air and a small one for the AIT sensor that looks alot like a breather. When I saw his truck 2 weeks ago it was huffing pretty bad at idle. Looked like a blown headgasket that was dumping antifreeze other than being black smoke. This was sitting there idling.

just stuff dripping on it, from washing truck, washing motor, road spray.

just a bad design, more or less. imagine hitting that with water hose,
it drips right on the sensor.

if the filter had stood straight up, sensor would have been protected.

Huh - one more reason I don't recommend oiled filters on a turbo engine...

well, it wasn't the MAP sensor - that was $75 down the tubes.

it must be the lift pump.

the DRB III says "it's running fine"

uh, ok.....except for it smoking, stumbling, and then dying...at which point my ECM locked up the DRB III.

the dealership can't find anything wrong with it.

runs good when cold, dies when full hot.
gets progressively worse.

i cleaned the fuel filter bowl & drained it some, put in new fitler,

did air filter

no change.

but the flow from cycling hte lift pump to pump some thru the filter was tiny, the local guy said it is my lift pump due low volume on key cycle...

???

Hey back up the truck. What the heck is that...tell us more. Does it draw intake air from that location under the hood?

It's the Super BHAF if I'm not mistaken. It is all the rave in XLR8R's book. Not sure if anyone else is running it or not, but he swears by the thing.

Of course I swear by it!
I designed the Super BHAF (or affectionately known as the BMFAF ) to flow the maximum amount of Cummins-spec airflow & filtration possible in the stock engine compartment; big enough to supply air for over 650HP & 1220 ft-lbs of torque.
It even incorporates the IAT and stock filter-minder...
I fabbed it out of 304 SS and aluminum, and it sounds like a naked turbo.

This from a guy who's running a home made methanol injection system!!

BHAF's dont flow enough.... for my taste.

I havent had any trouble with oiled elements and I have been running them on modded trucks for about 5 years now.
