Uh oh Broke Bolt -- HELP!
Uh oh Broke Bolt -- HELP!
Hi guys need some help. I was changing rear calipers on my truck today Everything went great until I noticed a small leak on the passenger side caliper. The bolt that holds the brake line to the caliper had a small crack in it. I guess I over tightened. The truck is on jack stands and and cant be used til I get another. Can anyone tell me where to get one? and what the correct torque setting would be? Thank you.
The bolt is called a banjo bolt and you're probably stuck with dealer only. Remove the old one and clean thoroughly. You cannot reuse the copper crush washers, so get some new ones, and some spares. If you reused the old ones you've got a leak waiting to happen. Torque is 20ftlb or 250 inlb. No torque wrench? Snug then 1/8 turn will put you in the ball park.
You can reuse the copper washers if you anneal them. As long as they do not have deep gouges in them. Back in the day when solid copper was used a lot for gaskets it was done all the time. I have a friend the restores MC’s and he does it, pretty hard to find new head gaskets for a 1913 Indian MC
To anneal a copper gasket, hang it on a piece of wire, heat it to a dull red with a torch, let it cool. The copper is now dead soft and ready to be reused
I have done it on many times on different things like Ford flatheads, VW air-cooled engines and Triumph MC’s and I have never had a problem.
