turning in 4wd

The other day I had my truck in 4wd and I went to turn the corner. My truck almost came to a complete stop. I know that normally in 4wd on a non slip surface turning is comprimised, but this different. I stopped the truck turned the wheel and the truck would not move when i stepped on the pedal. My ? is what could be the cause. I looked under the truck and everything looks OK. I will admit my knowledge is limited. Any help would be apreciated.

I know that my truck would move in that situation...just idling in first gear. back tire would just jump a lot.

OK, I'll guess that it is normal condition.

My Dodge is my fourth 4x4 truck. All of them would bind on pavement.

OK, it's normal for the front wheels to lock up when your going around a corner in 4wd. WHY DO I HAVE 80000 MILES ON THE TRUCK AND THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I'VE NOTICED THIS?

If you were on a dry or non-slip surface, and you have your wheels turned at an extreme angle, they will bind.... and if forced.... break..... that is why its a no-no unless in snow, mud, wet grass etc.....

your truck should move...it should not be binding up enough to keep your truck from moving...the back tire should just slip on the pavement and hop a little. I just did the same thing you did yesterday...and I had no problems moving...it is just harder.

This is happening when my wheels are turned about half way. It just locks up solid. I almost crashed because i couldn't turn around a corner. I pulled over, came to a stop turned my wheel and stepped on the gas. The truck wouldn't move. I'm familiar with driving a 4x4. I have been driving a 4x4 for 18 years and have never seen anything like it. Thanks for the replies. i guess i'll throw her up on the lift tonight & start tearing.

Seriously, I see you're in Canada but are you driving around in 4x4 on pavement with good traction????? As Ramasaur said that is a big No-No. Eventually something will break.

Just for laughs I went out and tested my truck in the parking lot.

Idling in 4WD, if I make a turn the truck will stop on its own from binding when the wheels are near 3/4 lock. It will move, reluctantly, if I give it some throttle.

Since the front axle components are turning all the time in 2wd or 4wd and it acts normally when going straight, I can't think of anything that could go wrong to cause your symptom.

I had a similar problem on my 94. Not quite as extreme though. Turned out to be ujoints. Good ol' non greasable factory ones. Took them apart, no needle bearings to be found.. Just dust!!

80,000 miles, if they've never been changed, that would be my guess....
