turbo form 04.5 onto an 03???

Just bought an 03 cummins 3500 dually. Awesome truck! bought it for pulling my backhoe around and a pretty heavy trailer. So, It has a small chip on it, I just ordered a Banks Intake with the ram air scoop, which is on my other cummins and I love. So, I have a guy that has a turbo off of an 04.5 with 42,000 miles on it for sale. Can I swap it straight over to my 03?

Yes you can. Do a search on here for the HE351 turbo. It is a much better turbo you will just have to deal with the boost solenoid which you don't need.

ok, thanks. for some reason I thought the stock turbo on an 04.5 was a good bit bigger than on the 03. A local diesel shop informed me I was wrong. I will check on the one mentioned above. thanks.

The one on your truck is an He341. The 04.5 to 07' are the HE351. The HE351 upgrade will be a good upgrade for you.

If you want wastegate control you will need to do something with the wastegate. You can leave the solenoid installed and unlpluged for air to to the WG, then just adjust the WG.

Otherwise it's a direct bolt on and a bit more air.

I'm not very familiar with adjusting the waste gate, how would I go about that, or how would I add the solenoid control? I guess which ever is easier

The solenoid cannot be used on your 03, but without power it allows full airflow.

To adjust boost you need to shorten the WG rod, try 4 or 5 turns and see how much boost you make and go from there. I wouldn't go over 35-38.

When I did this swap I had to back the mounting studs out on my exhaust manifold because there were not enough exposed threads. The studs are plenty long as they protrude through the backside so I simply backed them out until they were flush on the backside. Worked perfectly.

You can use a simple C-Clamp on the wastegate hose to "Adjust" the wastegate pressure. You probably want to get a boost fooler , if your "chip" doesn't already do that, to get the most boost possible.

As far as the solenoid, I just left it on and tiewrapped the harness out of the way. You can't see it anyways so I don't understand why so many guys worry about removing it and putting a plug in it's place. I have been driving around for three years with mine like this and have had zero issues...

by backing out the studs, do you mean the exhaust manifold to the motor, or the turbo to the manifold? Just looking at the turbo set up on the truck I am a little confused.

after getting the 04.5 turbo in my hands I understand about the solenoid stuff. Hoping to get this swapped out before the week is up. The compressor wheel has a little free play, moving around inside. I'm not sure how much play it should have, but there is no scaring and when I spin it there is no rubbing, so I am assuming it is ok..... any way to tell?

I was referring to the two mounting studs where the turbo connects to the manifold. The turbo has two studs on it and the manifold has two studs on it. The ones on the manifold are the ones that I had to back out because the mounting flange on my 05 turbo was a good bit thicker than the flange on my stock turbo.
