The only reason I'm sticking with CI4/+ oils is because I bought a stash a couple of years ago when the "uncertainty" with CJ4 was looming. I ran a run of CJ4 Delo and it came back great. But I still have copious amounts of the CI4+ left...but that's good, because I bought it at 2006 prices...and we all know how much oil spiked.
And its not a small amount either. I bought cases of Delo 15W40 Multigrade for about 36 bucks at the time (Canadian), and it's almost 50 now for the current (CJ4)

You show me a 100k miles motor that was driven the SAME way as another 100k mile motor with the 2 diff oils, then maybe you will have proof. Just use a good brand of oil, Rotella, Schaeffers, Amsoil.....ect. and you'll be fine. CI or CJ. Both work great. My samples from Blackstone with the NEW Rotella CJ are great. I am done worring about it.
I think to some degree you are right. The CJ blend will work ok and I haven't read of any engine failures due to using it.

That said........I tried CJ regular Rotella for a couple of oil changes and my TBN came back from Blackstone at (5.9) which was lower than it normally did running 5K miles.

My latest TBN was 10.9 running Shell Rotella Syn. 5w40 CI-4+ for 5K miles. That is nearly virgin oil according to Blackstone!

If you are going to run CJ blend I'd be leary of running over 5K miles on the oil. I change mine anyway at 5K...but i'd prefer knowing I could go 3 times that if I wanted.......and not minimize the TBN to much.

one thing I did notice, with shell rotella in a detroit powered bus I have the oil pressure is about 7psi less than when I have delo in it. switch back to delo and the pressure comes right back up and that is using the same napa filters. switched back and forth several times and always see the change. oil pressure with mobil delvac was exactly the same as with delo.

One thing that has come up about the CJ-4 oil is that it does not holdup as long as the CI-4+ oils and not recommended for long drain intervals. Also when CJ 4 oil first came out they said to cut your oil drain interval in 1/2 of you burned LSD and we all know some places still sell LSD. Maybe that is why some farmers hate Rotella oil and went back to using JD oil!

Ok. Well I just checked out the John Deer Oil and it is 11.88 a gallon here in Miles City. Heck, that is cheaper than my conv. Rotella 15/40 and it is the old CI. Whether its better or not, ITS 11.88 a gallon. U can bet I am guying 2 5 gallon pals. Also, the gentleman at the counter told me that they are getting a new upgraded JD Plus 50 in that is good for 500 hours. WOW. What is this about? Anyone know if it is still the CI? Thanks
Jason

Hey guys. I didn't even notice, but the Rotella that I get for free that I have been running only says CI4, well, and some other stuff but no where does it say CJ4. Wow. It is in 5 gallon buckets. I get it from our bulk dealer. I didn't even check on the API before because I just figured it was the new CJ4. So, am I wrong since it does not say CJ4, or would it for sure say CJ4 if it was? And if it is the CI4, why is Rotella still making it? It is a new shippment that the bulk dealer just got in on Friday.

The new stuff does say CJ-4 on it. So you probably were able to get some older stock. I got lucky and found 9 gallons (Rotella Syn 5w40 CI-4+) at a walmart in Mississippi over Thanksgiving...........and bought it!!! That plus my other stock.........I can go 5 oil changes now...or 25K for me. After that im prob switching to John Deere.

There are still a few gallons of the good stuff floating around out there.

The CI-4 plus is the best oil for 06 down They changed the oil for 07 up to keep pollution down. That way they keep the FEDS happy. That was when we got the diesel fuel 15 part per million. 500 part per million is the best for the 06 down.

My truck is an 07 but it is the 5.9, so really the CI oil is best for any 5.9

Wow, this bulk dealer that has the old oil just got in about 30 5 gallon buckets. I should probably pick up a few then. Also, when that runs out, guess I will go to the NEW John Deere. Still suppose to be the CI but has a 500 hour rating. Sounds good to me. Thanks guys

The JD oil sounds like good stuff. I'll have to give it a try at my next change.

For what its worth though my CJ Rotella came back good on analysis. I did my last change at exactly 6005 miles and the TBN was 6.9.

Ya! and here the JD is only 11.88 a gallon. That is cheaper than what most places charge for Rotella.... I think.
