Truck stratred growling last nite.

Last nite I was driving my truck and out of the blue it started growling. I first noticed it when decelerating. If I would push on the throtle a little it would go away. For abought 5-10 miles it only did it if I let off the throtle. I pushed in th ecluch while decelerating and it did not change so it was obviously comming from the drivetrain. After a few miles it started doing it all the time. It is a low toned, high frequency growl. I am thinking it mite be a front U joint butI wanted to see if anyone here has any ideas. Are U joints covered under warenty or are they considered a consumable part like breaks? The truck has around 49K on it. Thanks.

I would like to also because mine just started doing it this week. Same thing, sounds just like a growl, I couldn't think of how to explain it but that is good, I was thinking of calling it a gravely sound. I can only hear it when I let off the go pedal. Please post if you figure out what it is, I won't have time to look under the truck today.

I would go for u-joints. Mine were replaced at the dealer under warranty last week after 58000 miles. Both rear drive shaft u-joints were replaced. Drive it for awhile then feel to see if they are hot. My back one would burn your hand. BTW it was tight too, no play in the u-joint like I was expecting when they go bad. Mine started making a howling sound as I slowed down, then you could feel a growl/vibration as I came to a stop. Good luck!

i dont think u-joint with the growling...u-joints usually gets a clunking/clicking.

growling souns more like a bearing...check you driveshaft carrier bearing. and your front wheel bearings.

here is another thought too, if you only have the noise when applying the brakes as opposed to just slowing down without the brakes, it could be a pad that fell apart. i had that just last week, it would growl when using the brakes, pulled the wheels and found a front inside pad gone.

I had a u-joint go bad at around 30,000. It made a growling noise. When I called the dealer and explained it to them they knew right away it was probably a u-joint. They fixed it under warranty.

ditto on the u-joint. a little skinny pedal makes it go away for a little while - yup - would bet my next paycheck that it is a u-joint!

Mine had a howling/growl to it and I would have sworn it was in the drivetrain. Took it in last week, they replaced the turbo. Noise is gone, truck has more pep and getting better MPG.
