This problem has been on and off for about 6 months, and seems to only occur once in a while but multiple times in a week or day. The truck starts normally in the morning or at night if it hasn’t been driven that day, but it will not crank and will act like it’s in drive or reverse and not allow it to crank even if it’s in park already. It also only happens after the truck is left for less and 30 minutes then started again and must be shifted from park to reverse then nuetral and drive before going back to park and starting (sometimes) I’ve checked all fluids and fuses but cannot find anything. Keep in mind it is an auto and does runs perfectly otherwise.

Next time it does not crank, try holding the key in the start position and at the same time move the shift lever from park, through the range and then back to park. It it then cranks, you probably have a bad neutral switch. Let us know what fixed the problem.

I have noticed on my 2005 that the selector is a tad slow. I can put it in park but the square outline takes a little while to go around the P. Also when backing up to a trailer I throw it on Park to get out to walk back and see how much further I need to go for the trailer ball the truck will honk cuz it doesnt think its in park.

What I discovered after years of driving older trucks is that you cant move the selector fast like I do on my 1974 and 1995. I have simply slowed down my movement going from drive to park when I get somewhere and sometimes it takes a second or two to get the square around the P. Havent hard any problems since slowing down the process.
