Did you ever get this sorted out? I realize this is an old thread but it sounds exactly like my 04.5 3500 4x4 dually when the rear end went out. Growling noise mostly heard when coasting. 55k miles rebuilt under ext warranty. Apparently the bearings failed.

Ya its the front diff bearings. It was scedualed to get fixed a couple weeks ago then the mechanics office lady died teh day I had it sceduled to go in so that week was out and then he was on vacation last week so he was suposed to do it tomarow but I am buisy and wont be able to get it to him as scedualed. I am going on vacation late this week and all next week so now its scedualed for 8-1 to get fixed. Good thing I dont realy need the truck till we start camping again till after it cools off some.
