Transmission question...

I have just purchased a 2003 with the standard output engine. It has a build date of 7/02. What transmission is in this truck?

This is my first foray into this new of a diesel. My other was a 2001 HO 6 speed. What are some of the things to check out? What are some of the upgrades a person can do to increase fuel mileage?

Thanks!!

Is this good or bad? I have heard both ways.

It's a fine tranny if everything else is stock. As far as fuel mileage, the '03/'04 were the best for fuel mileage. (no 3rd injection event)

I am getting an Edge EZ and air box. I don't intend on bombing it to death, just trying to wake it up a little. I don't pull that much. Still ok?

you should be alright. stock trannies hate anything over 60+ over stock... i cant say they hate it, they just dont take to it well. do your intake, exhaust since i think you have 3.5" instead of 4" and then do the chip. grab some gauges when you get the coin too. your fuel mileage should be pretty decent after all that.

My truck has been doing fine with that set-up (never been higher than level 2 on the EZ). 60k miles and lots of heavy pulling in the mountains. Get gauges and the boost elbow too though...

Many, many thanks people. I was a little concerned about going with the automatic, but comforting words do help!! The last thing I want to do is replace a transmission, but the fuel economy would be nice.

You won't see but a "little"increase in fuel mileage. Not enough to warrant the exspense of the mods. But those mods AREN'T for fuel mileage and thats not the reason 99% have added such to their trucks. Its to go FASTER.
