Transmission lost second gear.
Last Saturday my transmission lost second gear. It would stay in 1st for a long time, and finally shift into 3rd. The TC wouldn't lock up at HWY speeds. The transmission fluid looked good, and no overheating that I could tell.
The dealership is rebuilding it right now. They tore it down and replaced some parts. The bill is going to come to about $2600. I don't know what they replaced yet, I am going to the dealership tomorrow morning to talk to the tech and get the scoop on what was eat up in the tranny.
Is there anything in particular that I should be aware of or make sure that they replaced? Does that price sound high for the work? Would I have been better off to have replaced the entire transmission?

Cause of losing secnd gear is KD band adjsutment getting extreme loose from heavy service or non adjustment. When you run out of threads on KD band adjustment screw the band is worn out..........................
KD band is perhaps 70 dollars. Rest of parts were for seals($30.00), preventive maintaince, insurance and tech comfort.

I second the band adjustment. But IMHO, the dealer is the last place to take a trans for repair unless under warranty. Should talk to a tranny shop or even call someone like Dave at Goerend or someone at DTT for some info or suggestions. $2600 does not sound too bad but maybe it could have n=been less.
A buddy of mine bought a 96 Ford plow truck with a "bad trans", no second gear, ended up the band had got so loose it fell off, he repaired it and adjusted the bands and that was two years ago, cost him the price of fluid, filter and a pan gasket.

In mine second would not even pull. RPM's would shoot up on the 1-2 gear change. Third and fourth would slip with anything more than approx 1/2 throttle.
On a side note I had mine rebuilt by a local transmission shop. They are well known for great service. I won't let my local dealer touch my truck........

I would have taken it to a transmission shop but none of them could get me in soon enough. I couldn't wait 2 weeks to get my truck back and the dealer could get it done fast. I will get a parts list of everything they replaced when I pick the truck up Monday.
I trust their work. They supposedly have a very good transmission man at the dealership. This is routine work for them. They sell a LOT of dodge diesels and have many customers who work them hard. Many diesels with goosenecks attached on the lot there all the time...
We'll see how it comes out. If I can get another year or 2 out of this transmission I will upgrade to a DTT or something similar next time.

I have seen several trucks loose second gear. The band strut that is cast steel rides against the ball on the end of the adjuster and holds one side of the band. This peice breaks and cost very little and can easily be replaced in the driveway at home.
