47 rh transmission second gear loss

Yesterday while pulling my trailer loaded with angle iron and I beam my transmission lost second gear. I had started in manual low and ease on the throttle and around 2300 or so let off and shift . Always before it goes to second gear. This is with overdrive locked out. When I get to 2300 or 2400 let off and shift . 3 gear and shortly after lockup. This one time it did not shift to second. Free wheeling . I thought I broke the anchor or strut in the second gear band. I stopped the truck put in reverse , no problems . I turned the truck around and headed to the house . This time in drive. Shifted good no problems . I thought now want is going on . Stopped the truck and checked the fluid levels , good . I am not sure what is going on but I turned the truck around and drove 60 miles or so and unloaded the trailer and drove home in overdrive , not a problem. I have a huge dislike for automatic transmission except power shift in equipment . Any one ever had that problem before. Thanks Jim

automatic

I can see this is not a real popular subject , I believe the problem is in the governor circuit. My plan is to drive it until it quits ... It is working now . Then install a 6 speed . Thanks you for reading the question Jim

Well... if you have a 47RH, you must have a '94 or '95 truck I would think.

You didn't say how much weight you were pulling, but it sounds like that might have had something to do with losing 2nd momentarily. My '95 is the first truck I've owned with an automatic and I love it. 330,000 miles and still going strong. 223,000 on the ATS rebuild.

Thanks for the reply Robert . I spoke to you many years ago and remember all of the transmission drama lol. The truck pulls a 4020 jd diesel and some times my backhoe. I have driven it about 900 miles since it gave trouble and not a single problem. I believe the problem is in the governor . It is working now. Guess your ats transmission is going to stay together lol . Glad to hear from you . Jim

I hate drama and I left the forum and only returned after I had a problem with the transmission. I was being lazy and should have just looked at the flow charts and trouble shoot it my self. Just never saw that particular problem before . Sure it was in the governor circuit. It only happened one time about 1500 miles ago. All or most of the guys that use to post on here are or don't seem to be here any more. I had respect for them but that's ABOUT IT or most of them. Don't miss all of the drama especially on the automatics , well I guess time sorted all of that out lol . There was some great information on camshafts, turbo, injectors .ect many years ago. The information saved me a lot of money. I guess the multi disc convertors discussion has worked itself out . I know it does not matter to most folks but a good personality makes a sale for me if I believe the person know there business and has a good product. I bet the ats will serve you well Jim
