Trans slipps when cold

Hi, I have a friend who bought an 06 CTD mega cab on my recomendation. At about 4000 miles he noticed that after sitting for several hours or overnight the trans would not engage for 3-6 seconds after putting it in drive. He can rev the engine all he wants and it won't move at all, then after a few seconds it starts working and is good the rest of the day. It sounds like the torque converter is leaking down like what happens when a trans gets real old and worn out. He has had it to two different dealers and both say it checks fine. What I'm wondering is has anyone else noticed this on their transmission, if so have you taken it to the dealer and if so what did they say?
Thanks
Dave

MINE IS THE SAME WAY. It will only get worse and the tranny will probably go next if you pull alot. I have herd that if you shift in neutral for a few seconds that will get the fluid going. I am not sure on this.

Just gotta pump some fluid in the tranny. You need to let the truck idle for around 20 seconds on the first start of the day to get fluid flowing. Some duramaxes wont go anywhere for a few minutes if its cold enough

That's been a part of Dodge trannys since the '60s. Mine does it too. It does NOT mean the tranny is about to go out. The fluid just drains back after sitting a while. Annoying, but harmless.

Mine does it too and when I called the dealership about it he told me that there is a TSB on them for the filter falling down. The tech told me that several new trucks have been towed in with total trans failiurs because of this and that i should get it in to them ASAP. The clincher is the tech who I talked to is on vacation this whole week, and won't be back till next Mon. and he is the dealerships transmission guy. So I hope it holds together till next Mon.and that he can have it fixed by Memorial weekend (the following Fri.) so I can pull the boat up north for my vacation.

Your rite...now I'm really confused..based on what the tech told me. I don't think I have either one of those transmissions in my truck. I'm pretty sure it is the 48RE in mine.

MEGA COP,

That tech must have been talking about a non CTD truck. As I said, slipping in the morning or after sitting is a common nuisance. Not an indication that it is about to blow. Maybe we are taking about two different things.

And remember that the pump does not work in park, you must shift into neutral for the pump to start filling things and then it will/should be ok for the rest of the day while driving it.

Problem fixed

The Dodge dealer first tried replacing the trans cooler line check valve. That didn't imporve the problem. Then they pulled the trans and found that a plug from a pre-bored hole in the front pump case had fallen out. They replaced the front pump and it seems to be fixed. No more delay. Thanks for the help.
