Trans shifting when overtaking

Guy's,
Been lucky enough to get given a 06 2500 4X4 auto as a company truck 25000 miles ....corporate CC to fuel it up

This is the first auto 2500 I have driven and was wondering if when flooring it to overtake someone , the tranny will drop back to third and hold there for quite a while before up shifting ... once it upshifts it takes off and were away.... but it just seems to sit there and rev and not really get too much done.

Is this how they all are ????

I am in working in Chile , so it's all single lane roads , you have to be able to get around whoever is in front quick time .

Thanks

That sounds like mine, soaring for 3200 RPM and needing a second or two of no load before shifting. I have to give it about half throttle to keep it in OD on a pass, but it isn't as fast that way.

Yep,normal for a stock trans and TC. You have to roll into the throttle and stage it to get it to pickup faster.

Another option is a TC lockup switch, it will lock the TC clutch and hold it in gear so you don't get downshifts or high revving.
