Trans questions

I have a 2003 2500 quad cab with the standard output cummins and the auto trans. Not sure if it is a 47 or 48 though.

Anyway, I have noticed once in awhile that when it goes to shift into overdrive it makes kind of a bang bang bang noise, it is hard to describe. It sounds like it is coming from the trans area.

It is a metallic sound also. Maybe a clank, clank, clank. Hard to describe.

Any ideas what it could be? The truck is completely stock.

Oh, and it only does it once in awhile and it seems like when I am very light throttle and it just slips into overdrive.

Thanks for any ideas
Paul

Take it to the dealer! That is not normal. Now if it was a ford?

Could the noise be coming from the turbo area? Sometimes you can get the turbo to 'bark' when shifting into OD at light throttle.

You may be on to something. I had a 6.0 ford diesel and it would do the "barking" noise if you backed out of the throttle. This noise sounds alot like that did. My only problem with taking it to the dealer is that I cant get it to do it all the time. Matter of fact if I try and make it do it it wont.

Being that the turbo is mounted low, this could be the noise. Does anyone else have this noise, and can you describe it for me.

Thanks for the info so far.

On mine it was the tranny dip stick tube vibrating against the a/c line when it shifted to O/D and torqued the motor over that way. I bent the dip stick tube over a little and it's never done it again. It did put a little wear mark on the a/c line before I finally found it.
