tranny troubles
hey i think i may have screwed up lol. i tried adjusting the bands on my truck just the one on the outside of the case the adjuster screw w/loc nut .. anyways the adjuster seems to go all the way into the case and does not really seem to bottom out or anything which is what i think i need to get the proper torque values.. now the truck wont shift into 2 unless i let off the gas pedal completely. im not sure whats going on or what i did wrong but i was hoping someone herecould help me out ... thanks for any help guys
make sure you used inch-lbs torque wrench or you will over tighten. If you're not feeling resistance and the adjuster screw is going all the way in, my guess is that the band is completely worn out or broken. It's only a guess but go in and loosen it then double check the torq.
the truck shifted fine before.. i had shuttle shift and i thought it might just need adjustment so i just did the one that was giving me problems which was the outside adjuster,, i did not drop the pan. i can put the adjuster bolt all the way into the case.. im not sure but if it was broken wouldnt the truck not shift at all past that gear?
i have 100 k on my truck and trans has been replace about 30 k ago by dodge under warranty. i guess i shouldnt have tried to fix something that wasnt broken lol.. any ideas on how to fix this ?

I did it too.
LoL guess what you did???!!!!
The same dam thing I did, 73000 miles ago.
The connecting link between the band and the apply servo piston has fallen out. Mine was in the pan when I changed fluid the next time. No big deal really. You just shift from 1st to 3rd and on up.
I actually have been procrastinating heavily about fixing the problem... for the last year and a half!
Drop part of the valve body bolts (9 or 10 total) holding the VB to the case, don't drop it completley out! Just loossend them up and let it drop down an inch or so. also, no gasket there or check ***** to roll out, and reach up in there with a magnet or needle nose pliers and put it back on.
I actually improved my mpg when that happened, but towing a trailer or going down a steep grade is a pain in the buttt.
Hope that helps.

The little piece is a cast steel spade shaped plate that has a counterbore in the one end to engage the cone shaped adjusting bolt (outside) and the other end is flattened to engage the band.
Doubtful anything is wasted... it just fell out. Like I said.. mine's been out for the past year and no problems or anything "worn out".
Sure, drop in a shift kit while you have it off, if you take it completley out. The linkage is a little pest occasionally but take you time, spend the better part of a Saturday doinbg it and you'll be fine.

here's what it looks like
this is page 2181 from the manual. Item no#3 is the one I'm referring to.
It should make you feel better about dropping the VB. This is what you're supposed to see when it comes down.
The other end very seldom comes off because the rotation is in a direction that keeps it wedged in there.
Hope this helps.

as far as the shift kit is concerned. when i did my first one, i had never worked on a tranny. i just followed the instructions and put it back together and it worked great! definitely made it shift better. much more direct. my next tranny i put a 5.0 ratio lever in and HOLY crap. nothing like chirping the tires with a hardly any effort.
anyways, GL
